I'll guess you probably don't play in flat keys very much. A good exercise would be to play a one-octave Bb scale starting at fret one on the A strings and crossing to the E's. Fingering will be: ...

Yep, I've got no complaints about my Junior, which is from about 1924— the coveted "Coolidge era". :)

    Re: 1909 Gibson mandolin

The one-piece top on my A-jr. goes from quite fine grain on the bass side to pretty wide on the treble. But not as wide as Skip's example. :disbelief:

Narrow bass to wide treble seems...
  6. Re: Paganini Sonata Concertata Allegro Spiritoso

Excellent job, on both instruments! And it's very impressive that you seem to be playing both parts from memory.

Nice to hear this piece again— I used to play guitar on all this repertoire. ...

Re: Heard it through the grapevine

I'm guessing you want notation for the vocal line, and probably in Marvin Gaye's version, yes? Good tune, but it's too simple to bother writing out— you can get it by ear.

    Try it in D minor...

Sorry to hear, but very glad you're still with us. Hope we'll be seeing more of you here at the Cafe.

    The Break (jazz original)

I put this up on Soundcloud in late June, and I see it's now been played three times. So I'm giving it a little nudge. Quartet number for mandolin, guitar, bass and drums, recorded around 2007. ...

Re: Mandolin by Cousenon a mirecourt

Yeah, Mick, it would have been easy to buy, but not to play (neck width). ;)

I was hoping to put some of the ad photos into the thread here for documentation purposes, but couldn't lift them. :(

Here's another member of the family we're talking about, a Couesnon for sale here in my town. No financial interest, of course:

    Pigeon Roost Breakdown

Here's a ditty I wrote in 2009, at a time when I was playing the odd gig with a bluegrass/country band. The title alludes to Red Allen's home town, and to the fact the band tended to break down...
