Re: Adding a pickguard to an Eastman

Shouldn’t be too hard, though I’ve not personally done it. I like the look but don’t like playing with them, so I took off the one that came on my Rigel CT-110. Two tiny screws, nothing to it. I...

    Re: ISO Mandolin Luthier

All excellent recommendations. Canít go wrong with any of those mentioned. James Condino in Asheville is also a regular here of excellent reputation.
  3. Re: How much of a difference in sound does string gauge make?

On the better mandolins I’ve had I’ve switched back and forth between J-74 and J-75 gauge strings based on what my local shop had in stock, and there was a minor difference in feel and tone, but...

Re: Just changed up my strap

Oh, yeah, unless I’m just trying someone else’s mandolin out quickly I always play with the strap I’ve my left shoulder guitar style. Way more stable for me that way, even if it’s not Big Mon cool…

Re: Just changed up my strap

I used to go head stock but it got in the way of my left hand. Moved it between the first and second tuning posts and that helped. Kept it that way until I got my Kelly A-5, and have gone neck joint...

Re: Modernizing an A-4. Yes or No?

Chris Thile also had his Loars' FBs changed, radiused, and modern frets installed. I buy instruments to play, not to collect (at least so far), so my vote is to get the work done to make it play the...

Re: Distressed Mandolin and Regular Playing

I don't mind some honest play wear and some battle scars. My tele is missing a chunk of lacquer from a strap failure once when I had music in one hand and a drink in another...caught it on the first...

    Re: Jarrod Walker's Loar?

I saw him in Concord, NC, last night. Man, Billy Strings is a a force of nature, and the rest of the band was phenomenal as well. Especially enjoyed seeing Jarrod and Alex! Jarrod was playing the...

Re: Monel strings - what to do, what to do?

I’ve tried Martin and D’Addairio monels. The Martins aren’t bad strings, but I, too, prefer the D’Addairios. Have them on both my Kelly A5 and my Rigel CT-110. Don’t own an oval hole one presently.

Re: Pick Choice on Electric Mandolin vs Acoustic

OP, that's a nice looking pair of mandolins!

My main acoustic pics are BC CT-55 or TAD-60, but Wegen TF-140 and a Miller pick I've been using a lot of late are close seconds. I used to use just...

    Re: NMD: 2007 Triggs F5

Duuude, sorry you had such a bad experience with the Triggs. Ben is great to work with. Iíve bought a mandolin and a guitar from FG, and both arrived ready to go with new strings, condition as...

    Re: Weber Yellowstone Transformation

IIRC, Brett was their finish guy for a lot of years, so I'd trust his input (and, apologies if I'm incorrect on that, Brett). Not every one can be a cannon, and, man, think of all the top tier...

Re: My First Mandolin- A Keeper or keep looking

    Eda,

I have a Guild guitar with a sticker serial # like that because it was a blem.
They were having laquer issues and this one came off the line with finish checking. Sounds and plays great, was...

Re: Mandolin is guitar upside down?

I play both and just consider them their own instruments. I see what they’re saying, and G, C, and some other first position chords it’s easy to see why they say that. But, if I try to think about...

I have a Pono Acacia tenor I bought from The Ukulele Site that I really like. It has a truss and actually came with a set of steel strings, which I’ve gotta say are pretty awesome. It was maybe a...

    Re: Recording King RA-998

I know I've played a couple of the Johnsons and I think I played a Recording King at some point a few years ago. IMHO the RM-1 is a far superior instrument wrt build quality, tone, all the boxes....

Re: What Are Some Good Options in the $2-3k range?

I’ll throw another vote of confidence for Silverangel as well. I played an Econo model for 8 or 9 years before I bought the Kelley, and there are certainly times I miss the SA. It was my first “real”...

Re: Golden Gate "Clown Barf" Extra Stiff Pick

Re: Pedal Board Show & Tell

This is an arena I've been reluctant to dive too deeply into for some reason, though probably because my first amp (Roland Cube 30W) had EFX. While not great they did enough for my meager needs.

I forgot to mention that mine is the Walnut with antiqued finish. Looks great!

I agree with Jim about the TP but actually like the wider nut. I think 1 and 3/16 is probably my true sweet spot, but...
