I do exactly this. I go to my instructor once a week and then spend time with mike Marshall's lessons online. I started playing about 6 months ago and it has worked well. Do it!

I am a beginner and have been using "Mel bays complete mandolin method" to learn reading standard notation. It is pretty easy to follow.

Welcome from a fellow newbie. Got my first mandolin last week and took my first lesson yesterday. Sounds like there is a real good mix of newbie to experts here. I have learned a ton in just a week.

Check out red light cafe on Thursdays in Amsterdam Walk. I caught a bluegrass band there before and seems like there is a group that jams before the bands come on.
