Re: David Benedict's new dream mandolin

I came up with that ratio by counting the number of turns taken to go one complete rotation on the tuning rod.

Mike Edgerton suggests that ratios as high as 24:1 were common back in the 1960s....

Re: David Benedict's new dream mandolin

Nice! I like the larger f-holes, seems like that helps with sound projection.

Seeing that Rubner tuners were used, I wonder about the gearing ratio. I have two mandolins, one has 26:1 (Grover, I...

    Re: Church Praise Band Question

I haven't played in a church band since the 1980s, but based upon my guitarist brother's experience, your post is spot on. There are a lot of electric guitar players out there looking for steady...

    Re: Church Praise Band Question

So then you know the joke about the bass player and guitar player walking down the street together. What is the difference between them?

The bass player is heading to a gig.

    Re: Church Praise Band Question

My experience is that contemporary church music has fossilized into a standard format that rarely contains a melody line of significance, and is geared towards keyboards, electric guitar, and...

    Re: playing late and drinking

Makes sense. Too little potassium (K), calcium, and magnesium in one's diet can cause cramps, and bananas are high in K.

    Re: Random mandolin sightings

Drummers don't play chords either; she is basically playing rhythm by just hitting something in time with the beat. Maybe she needs that to keep in step with the others, IDK.

    Re: Gig material

Try "St. Louis Blues", an easy song in G, and the guitarists that I have played music with seem to really enjoy it because it is the BLUES. Very easy to improvise over, they can all try out their...

    Re: Uncle Don Brown's Loar

Fascinating video and outstanding repair work! I am curious as to how many hours that repair job took.
  11. Re: John McGann transcriptions - Billie's Bounce and St. Thomas

Thanks. Give me a year to practice these and I might be able to post a video.

Re: Christmastime is Here - NMD

Eric, on Steve's FB page there are photos of your mandolin during construction. Go down to 13 November 2022. That myrtle back is gorgeous! Hoping that you can post a video so we can hear how the pine...
  13. Re: Pick selection time: And the survey says……

Interesting results. I chose #2 over #3 and then #1 last. In fact, I use the Prime Tone 1.5 all of the time (#3) so was surprised that I liked #2 better in the sound samples. Not going to change my...

Re: Clip-on mic vs Removable Pickup

I have used a Schertler Dyn-M contact mic that is attached with a green putty and does not mar the mandolin top. I zip tie a small 48-V phantom power box on my mic stand and send both vocal mic and...

    Re: The Honeymoon is OVER!!!

Now you got me thinking about a joke about the Vikings (the real ones, not the NFL ones).

On a long journey, after several weeks at sea, the captain made an announcement to the rowing crew.

  16. Re: Pick selection time: And the survey says……

    Pick nos. 2 >> 3 >> 1 in that order.

It sounds like you are a beginner. I would skip the chop chords, which are really limited to high-speed bluegrass. When I first started, the chop chords...

    Re: String recommendations.

D'Addario Nickel Bronze medium heavy 11.5 to 41. Put some meaty tone into that E string pair.
  18. Re: Daddario NBM11540 Nickel Bronze also discontinued

Yeah, I used phosphor bronze for several years and never liked them. They went dead fast and corroded fairly easily. Those nickel-bronze D'Addario were a breath of fresh air and I bought them in...
  19. Re: Daddario NBM11540 Nickel Bronze also discontinued

This was my favorite set also. D'Addario called it the "Custom Medium" set (11.5/40). I see that there are still "Medium Heavy" sets available (NBM11541), and they go 11.5 down to 41. The difference...

Re: String set with best treble response

I went to using D'Addario nickel bronze strings with an 11.5 E string and consider it the best set for my mandolin. To my ear, that extra 0.0005 does make a difference with better tone. Methinks that...

Very interesting video, thanks for posting.

My choice would be "Whiskey Before Breakfast".
