Hi- I built a mandocello with a Dtube 3 years ago with a 25 1/2 in scale. It sounds great and the neck has stayed perfectly straight without a truss rod. I am currently finishing up an f5 with...
Hi All- I'm Starting an A shape western cedar top with F-holes and was wondering what the best choice for tone bars would be. I have red spruce sitka spruce and western cedar as choices.

Thanks for the responses. I did a little research on DIY nut making from scratch and am really not interested in doing the work involved with using butane or white gas to de-grease it which from...
Anyone have a source other than Ebay for bone nut blanks in bulk for a reasonable price?
Thanks
Joe
Here's an updated url to AllRed's special section on luthiers using their carbon fiber products.

Use the same type of tailpiece as for a mandolin so you can spend a little and get a stamped gold or a cast gold.
Stewart Mcdonald sells both.
Allen makes several cast
James are beautiful...
Hi All- I posted a short film on youtube regarding the use of Allred's D-Tube in the neck of a Mandocello I'm building. I thought it would create some lively debate!

Thanks for the responses everyone. I think I'll go with a one foot adjustable and give it a year to settle in then maybe switch to a one foot, one piece.
I am also trying something new with this...
No great science or engineering involved in the design. I have some specs for traditional 2 piece bridges that I have pulled off of several friends and jammers instruments. I've also done some one...
I typically start out with an adjustable design and replace it after a year with a one piece.
Take a look at this Carbon fiber designed D-Tube. A little pricey but there is added sound quality in the end aside from great stiffness.

Hi Everyone- I'm designing the bridge for an F mandocello that I'm building. At the Woodstock guitar show last fall I spoke with a few archtop builders about plate thicknesses etc. and noticed that...
Top, Bottom, headstock, and all blocks are drawn. Scale will be 25 1/2. Thicknesses and tone bars are all figured out. I'm going with F-holes. I just couldn't decide on side thickness.
Hi All:
I'm getting ready to saw all my rough dimensional lumber for my mando cello build. What I am building will end up being similar to Weber's F style in size. I can't find anyone around me...
Hi All- I'm still working out the details of my mando cello build and am wondering about opinions for the differences in sound in choosing a center oval hole over f-holes. I've never build...
Hi All:
Anyone have a suggestion for fretwire size for a mandocello? I'm planning a first time build. Thanks
Hi All- I am interested in the method you use to assure that the neck is lined up with the mando body on glue up. I do a dovetail but don't always get it slop free so I use a straight edge with a...
If you want to tackle an F style mandola I take a look at what Smith Creek offers.

Anyone try one of these 3d printed tailpieces? They look interesting. There are 2 price...
I have to make a bridge for an F octive I'm building. I have never bothered with bridge building. I usually get a Cumberland for the mandos and mandolas I've done. Steve doesn't do octaves.
If...
Wow! You guys went way off on a tangent! I was really looking for opinions on the difference in playability between a flat or radius board and what others have used if they did do a radius. I do...
Hi All- I'm working on my first F octive. Just finishing up the binding so neck and fret board are next. I am doing a 22" scale. I had planned to just do a flat fret board but now am thinking...
Hi Rob- Nice looking and sounding! I'm currently building a mandola and want to take on a f style octave next. Did you work off an available plan for yours? Thanks
Joe
Thanks Devin. I was leaning toward shellac. I like the paper towel idea too.
