And here's some information on Benko from the Twelfth Fret store.

This mandolin is up for sale on Kijiji in Mississauga, Ontario Canada. Frank Benko was a builder originally from Croatia who came to Toronto. There are some other mandolins of his on the Cafe but...
Yes, of course, Jim.
Kick Up the Devil on a Holiday. I got it from James Bryant.

Doesn't the back looked carved?
It looks handmade to me.
Still a nice find!
Listening to the recording of Hopetoun House. Just lovely.
Paul, I know your looking for an F but Folkways has a 1922 A2 that is in very good condition. While my experience is more limited, I've also really liked every early 20s Gibson I've played.
Well, I got no answers to this question but in the end I decided to try D'addario EJ72 mandola strings. I just put them on yesterday but I'm so far pleased.
Poul, Aquila makes a ukulele Fifths tuning set. I use those. They've worked well also on a soprano. The cheap sopraninos used to be on ebay but it seems that only somewhat pricier--and no doubt...
My turn.
When I travel I try to take one of my two good instruments in a hard case. This may mean, if flying, having to check my carry-on bag because I usually have a computer bag too for work....
I was there too, thanks to Jim--thanks!
Picked up this photo a while ago. Wonder who made the tenor.

I love seeing these odd one of a kind mandolins. If only they could talk.
On the subject of travel mandolins, I built a small and simplified flatback that has gone with me to China and other...
Hi all,
I'm playing a 23 inch tenor but am capo-ing it at the 2nd fret and tuning GDAE. Right now I've basically got D'Addario Octave mandolin strings (12, 22, 32, 46) on it. It sounds pretty...
It looks somewhat like the Vega mandobass depicted in Graham McDonald's "The Mandolin: A History." p. 188. Also with a double-bass style headstock and two points. But it's not as nice.
My little LL story from about 18 or 20 years ago. We were visiting Northern California (from Canada) and went to a vinyard where a bluegrass band was going to play. But we were too early. Only one...
Not trying to be contrary, I find all this tenor stuff fascinating and am enjoying all the info. All 23 inch tenors seem to join at the 14th fret--Martin O18s, Blueridge, Recording King, even the...
Fox, I looked at my wife's Martin 000-17. The bridge is actually a couple of inches higher at least than the spot you suggest. From what I can see, anyway. Interesting.
Fox, that's interesting. One of the reasons I mention it is because I have a Gold Tone TG-10 which I recently picked up used. The Gold Tones have had mixed reviews so I've been surprised how good...
Verne, I think you may have made this comment about bridge placement before. I don't quite understand it. This tenor and Blueridge and Gold Tone are all essentially the same scale length. All join...
Thanks for letting me know!
I knew him only through his recordings. A real loss. A beautiful musician.
