Re: Gibson F2 and F4. Difference in sound ?

[QUOTE=jimmy powells;1871063]To answer Lenf12, I reckon I have as good as I am gonna get in the Uk. /QUOTE]

Perhaps, but also as good as you're gonna get just about anywhere in the "mando-sphere"...

Re: Information on Michael Kelly Mandolin

His business was called Mail Box Music in Clearwater, FL. I believe that Tracy was a Gibson executive before moving his family to Florida. Nice guy BTW!!

    Re: D’Addario flat tops

I've been using D'A EFT-74s for years on a 1956 F-12 and more recently on a 1992 A5-L. They have the sound and projection of regular PB strings (for BG and folk styles) without the string "zing" of...

Re: My Tone Gard review. Get one for your mandolin

Hi Will, a long time ago the Providence Mandolin Orchestra was invited to play an outdoor gig in CT on a very hot, humid day. The "dress code" was black pants and white shirts. The varnish finish on...
  6. Re: this is so cool-Marty stuart and Carter Webb

Here's a shot from when Marty and the Superlatives played here in Clearwater last Nov. 2021. Young Mr. Webb and his father played a tune or two with the band that night as well. Agreed that Marty and...
  7. Re: Previously unknown Loar K5 Gibson mandocello shows up!

You don't see a Loar signed K-5 mandocello everyday, and it was undocumented (in the F-5 Journal or the Mandolin Archives?). It's sure in nice condition for 98 years old. Let the bidding wars begin...

That is one great looking and sounding mandolin. I'll have to look for "Homer the Roamer". Very nicely played btw. Thank you!!

Re: Need advice between two guitars.

Well, the Redondo does have that iconic Fender headstock with 6 in line tuners but for a good acoustic guitar, I would stick with the Yamaha. Which one sounds better and plays easier? That's the...

Re: Gibson A24 (?) On Baltimore CL

The top finish looks wrong to my eyes. Too much of a 3 color sunburst to be from the 20's. I'd bet it went back to Gibson (or a competent luthier) back in the 40's-50's for a makeover...my dos...

    Re: mandolin banjo - anyone's 2 cents

A left handed compliment, no doubt. Given the fragile nature of my friendships these days, I wouldn't subject them to the agony of s mandolin-banjo. i might be sent to the corner for that. Besides I...

Re: Northfield mandolins - USA or China made?

Who cares??? An item as personal as a musical instrument should be evaluated on its own merits, regardless of its country of origin. If you were offered an original signed Loar (USA) or Stradivari...

    Re: Describe your MAS progression

"Too many decades" for me too but my first "good" mandolin was and still is my 1916 Gibson blackface F-2 that was upgraded to look like an F-4 with double flowerpot headstock inlay and back binding...

Re: Sitka vs. Red Spruce in mandolins

Absolutely not a deal breaker depending on what you mean by "if you found". If it's the difference between adi and sitka, I would say, if the sound speaks to you, who cares? There's enough...

Re: Clip On Tuners / What Cha Got ?

I still have a couple of Snark tuners hanging around but mostly I'm using a tc electronics polytune clip-on. You can see it outside pretty well and it's accurate enough for rock 'n roll. ;)

"Perfect replacement" for sure. Here's one of Darryl's F-5 pickguards installed on my '56 F-12. Mine has the Pat. Mar. 30 '08, no serial #'s. It's a very classy final touch to finish off...

I hear ya Glassweb!! They were one of my early exposures to mandolin in a band/duo context as well (Maggie May and Led Zep were major too). Thanks much JB for posting these. Sad to hear the news.
