That reminds me of a mandolin I saw once that was made in the Philippines.
To a certain degree, yes; I've played 17 and 19 fret tenor banjos, 5 strings strung as a pseudo-plectrum for DGBE, etc. and the string gauge will be determined by the scale length and the sound and...
I've used CGDA, GDAE, and DGBE on tenor banjos - and all 3 tunings need their own strings, except the high E string on octave mandolin and Chicago tuning are the same.
So yes I do have to change...
Coming from both an Early music and Middle Eastern music POV, the whole step is there as a part of an oud tuning. A typical 5 course oud was often tuned EADGC or GADGC.
So your tuning is missing...
I play one of Ernie Fishbach's European style instruments:

That looks a lot like my first Japanese made bowlback.
These are variations on the Japanese Suzuki models; some are nice playing and sounding, many are overbuilt and somewhat dull sounding. they...
Unless it's a strolling gig (like at an italian restaurant) I sit when I play mandolin. No strap - including standing.
Another vote to digitize the collection, please.
Possibly so, also could be a partial arm support.
I played "Breezin" a lot over the years on guitar gigs.
it would make a great mandolin tune. D major...ideal!

A Hawaiian guitar is a lap steel, in fact the original ones!
Now, that particular type of Hawaiian lap steel is a Weissenborn design. What we know as a Dobro was another design of acoustic similar...
Good advice - but you can learn bar technique and right hand picking and blocking on the cheapie nut-extension acoustic.
Also, one would not need an 8 string, although they do come in handy at...
My copy arrived and I'm very happy with it. Although I am enjoying it, it is going to be a gift to friends that like French and Italian music.
The book covers a lot of variety, including 60 tunes...
That's what a player of certain old-time fiddle styles told me once - some of the tunes had notes that were" in between" frets on a guitar, banjo or mandolin.
I guess this method of fretting...
And for me, used to standard guitar tuning, DADGAD makes me feel like it should be called another instrument rather than "guitar".
It is indeed about the fingerboard and bridge, particularly in that the frets are laid out in a certain system that allows for a string to produce all the tones needed for a fully chromatic scale in...
There's a lot of BS about tunings on guitar websites, ranging from variations on 12 tone ET tuning (which is what fretted instruments in the Western world are designed for, and it is a compromise) to...
A .73mm Ultex/Ultem sharp point will do for most things on both instruments, but I do use other picks on guitar ( a thicker one for swing stythm, a much thicker one for gypsy jazz), mandolin, and lap...
Although I was playing mostly mandolin for much of the last year, for a week or so I've only been playing guitar. It all balances out somehow.
There are several similar threads on the forum, you can use the search function to find them.
However, don't let the complexities of jazz scare you off, if you want to learn to play jazz, play...

There are old dance band and jazz scores, stock arrangements, etc., but they usually just name the chords, no diagrams.
BTW, in the New Orleans days of early jazz, the guitar was often used before...
I'm afraid I would have suggested getting the portable sound system or amp with a (rechargeable?) battery.
