Re: Do instruments appreciate in value over time?

That's neat but it's an Apples to Oranges comparison. What stocks specifically did you buy in 1923? Because odds are you would have lost your shirt in the crash of 29, as another person pointed out....

Do instruments appreciate in value over time?

Do you think that hand made instruments appreciate in value over time?

While in the immediate term the instruments are going to be played, and thus become "second- hand" when sold, a condition...

I wonder can they PIN the latest week to the top of the threads in the list?

Currently it shows Week #309, but that thread started in 2015.

    Many thanks.

On a somewhat related note, has anybody had any luck machine converting ABC to TAB?
There is this well known site: https://www.mandolintab.net/abcconverter.php

Re: Do you apply oil to your fretboard?

Ok so you use a mineral oil that's lemon scented, but wouldn't mineral oil just dry out the wood?

Do you apply oil to your fretboard?

It seems common to apply oil to the fretboard after cleaning it.
This makes sense as i'll want to protect the wood.
There are some specialty products out there, do you use them?

    I've read...

    Re: OM Scale Lengths

    Ok some interesting replies here.
    Here's a follow up question:
Assuming GDAE tuning and playing Irish melody: how FAR of a leap is it from the high A on the 5th fret Estring, to the high B (7th...

    OM Scale Lengths

There's seems to be a pretty big difference in scale lengths for OM.
I have a 23" scale one, not for any particularly reason; that's just what the instrument i picked up happened to have.
    I'm a...

    Re: Octave Mandolin Course

Thanks, i'm interested but it looks like registration is basically closed.
Also, time zone difference will probably mean I can't attend the Zoom call.

    Re: Irish Mandolin Recordings

If you are just looking for recordings of Irish Mandolin then you should check out Aidan Crossey.
He has a site with loads and loads of tunes and also the tab.

He has changed his website layout...

Re: OM, What pick thickness do you use?

hmm, those are all much stiffer than .70 or .60mm.
Maybe i'm moving in the wrong direction.

OM, What pick thickness do you use?

I started with a Dunlop .73mm but it was too stiff.
Next grade down at the local music shop was .60mm so I bought a couple.
Seems to work better but when hammering through some triplets they start...

    OM string gauges question.

I had a local luthier work on my OM a while back and he had replaced strings (among other things obviously).
He wrote down the string gauges he recommends:
    .012 S
    .022 W
    .036 W
    .046 W

    What...

Re: Tuning issues - Octave Mandolin

In fairness the nut and it's grooves don't look very good.
    The grooves look crudely done.

I tried moving the bridge back a tad, like maybe 1mm and tuned, but the results are sort of all over the...

Re: Tuning issues - Octave Mandolin

They are all Sharp, except for the E string

Problem is more acute on the lower frets, as i go up the fretboard the notes are more and more where i expect.

    Tuning issues - Octave Mandolin

    Hi
I have a entry level Octave Mandolin from Hora that has irish Bouzouki strings on it (so i'm told).
This is standard here (in ireland).

Anyway one of my A strings is constantly going...

Re: Octave Mandolin - capo question

    For variety.

You know like maybe generally speaking you like the sound of an octave mandolin but for a particular tune or 2, the mandolin sounds nicer.

    Octave Mandolin - capo question

Forgive my ignorance but with a Octave Mandolin tuned to GDAE, if i want to make it a mando, do i capo at the 12th fret? That just seems way too far.

I think i saw someone on the 5th fret but then...
