That’s a great site, thanks.
Heard this song on random and the mandolin double stop accompaniment is very sweet. Discog says Sam Bush is playing but I that’s the only source I found, and they called the song The Great Day. I’m...
Or just pull up picture of 12 String guitar next to a regular guitar and ask them how many guitars they see.
4 string mandos have a thinner top, and they can be quite loud. Arrow Jazzbo sounds amazing as a 4 string, most pristine articulate sound I have personally heard coming from a Mando.
I played an 815v for a while, it is much more matte finish than that so I would bet that is not a Varnish.
Awesome. My Dad gifted me a nice mandolin, which lead to us getting together weekly to play to play jazz/fiddle tunes/bluegrass, swapping mandolin and guitar back and forth as we go. All started...
Ultimately it is a what can you afford thing. If your budget is sub 1000, with a 315, you are going to get a grade above your Rogue but still lacking great tone. 1500-2500 is next level, 2500-4000...
My four faves are: Monroe Waltz, Tennessee Waltz, Kentucky Waltz and Butch Baldassari’s style Across the Universe

Philips, Grier and Flinner do a real nicer version of this, starts a little slow but hang in there. Was playing along to it last night thinking what a perfect song it is for mandolin.

Sierra supposedly has very low action, and must plays with a soft touch to avoid extra noise.
As well as advice above, I will add, slowly play the same passages over and over adjusting where you...
Should be noted that the Eastman 815 really mellows nicely after a few hours of playing. I test drove one for a few weeks and it was a much nicer, more articulate mandolin after a few days. I would...
I am really bad at listening to these comparisons, compared to actually playing them, but the Bourgeois and Eastman sound very similar, with a different frequency more dominant. The Northfield...
Had an 80’s Givens as a loaner for a month and then got an Arrow G. That’s it, nice and easy. Guitars, now that’s a long long long list.
I would say I am in the same situation. I have only owned one mandolin, an Arrow G, and it will probably be my only one ever: it is well made, sounds great, adequately covers a bunch of styles,...
I am pretty sure Big Bug was the first instrumental Mando song I ever heard. Was on my playlists for decades amongst all my regular music, before I finally was ready to accept Mandolin into my life....
I spent years chasing every possible tone altering thing earlier in my guitar playing life. For me now, on mandolin, I am much more mellow regarding all that: I find that good playing trumps most...
Just listened/played along with this album….great stuff. Love the vibe of it.
That’s a sweet looking mando. Sounds like your bonding process is going well! Love finding one that just feels “right” in your hands.
Edit: Just read up on the Bourgeois line. Interesting.
Started mando in my fifties but have 40 years of guitar, a few of piano and lots of musical theory to help with journey. Wished I had started earlier, after only a few years, I consider it my main...
He is Billy Strings Mando player.
Thing I like about bluegrass reunion album is it is mostly key friendly for beginners and has lots of slower paced songs that you can easily keep up with, and...
For listening, an Essential Monroe album. As for playing, for someone just starting out, Grisman’s Bluegrass Reunion has a a collection of mostly slower songs full of great mando licks (I think I...
Well, that was one of the most thought provoking, informative things I have seen on YouTube in a long while. Excellent video.
I love playing this, and Big Bug too. When I first started playing, in our first session my father suggested we play this…lucky I found Birdland Bounce which was at a manageable speed. He learned...
It was worth watching just to discover Tao Quale, and the Crying Uncle band. So many great young BG players these days.
Re: Try before you buy.
One thing I have noticed in trialling this 815 is the substantial difference in tone and warmth after a few hours of playing….completely different animal now versus when...
