Re: Amber Big Mon at Dust Strings

I did play it… unlike other NF F2s I’ve played this one didn’t knock me out. I’d go with an Eastman A model oval hole instead… a MD404 or MD504 if you can find one. These two models are an oval-hole...

Amber Big Mon at Dust Strings

I was at Dusty Strings on Wednesday and got the opportunity to play eight (8!) new Northfield mandolins! Now how often does that happen?!?

My personal fave was an amber/tortoise Big Mon model with...

Re: Should I Resist Waverly Tuners?

My favorite mandolin tuners of all time were Gilchrist's "reworked" Gotoh tuners that he used for many, many years on all his mandolins. They always worked effortlessly and perfectly.

    Perhaps...

    Re: Is this an A-2Z?

Hey Jim... although everybody has referred to Andy Statman's legendary black-top Gibson snakehead as an "A2z" it is, in reality, marked on the interior label just as yours... an A2-. It appears yours...
  7. Re: Monteleone F5 - #4 of his original 10 Loar copies

Do you want to buy a mandolin or a name? These days I prefer buying mandolins.

    Re: Anthony Hannigan

Damn... what a shame... Anthony was a fantastic player who had, as all great players do, a phenomenal right hand. His cross-picking and flatpicking skills were off the hook. He was also very generous...

Re: Going rate for an post-Loar 1920s Gibson A4?

The post-Loar, non-snakehead A4 models are some of the best sounding oval hole mandolins that Gibson ever produced. Every one I have played has been exceptional!

    Pricing-wise I agree with rcc56...

    Re: Girouard Griffith Tribute A5

Looks nice... however I would just go with Girouard spaced "properly" on the headstock rather than bothering to put a "The" on there. It looks cramped and kinda silly. Same with the tailpiece. I mean...

  18. Re: Andy Statman and Jake Eddy in State College, PA

Yes, Andy still has his old blacktop snakehead, but he does not really perform with it anymore. He recently purchased a Lloyd Loar F5 and that is his regular performing instrument. He also has an...

His legendary Fern F5 is equally compelling... I might even prefer its tone over Crusher's... tough call.
