Re: Pretty bowlback with lots of MOP

    No idea.
I have a portrait mandolin as well but also without label.

I was told it was the wife of the owner but suspect it to be a contemporary actress.

Re: new mandolin , no label

Sure, I just thought you all might know a normal mandolin

    It's 19 cm total.

Now: How to make a miniature bridge with 8 grooves? ;)

I'll just have to find a teak splinter somewhere.

  6. Re: Light strings for Neapolitan bowl-back

Aquila makes a set of low tension nylgut strings for mandolin. I like the sound of them, especially for classical music. They are not so shrill as some mandolin strings.

    Re: Picks for arthritis

I make my own teflon picks but they are very slippery, so I stuck some pieces of antiskid tape ,meant for boatdecks, to them and they are now very easy to hold, you almost don't have to squeeze them....

    Re: Picks for arthritis

Try a Kodiak thumbpick. The only thumbpick I have found that allows you to strum both up and down. You can use it as a thumb- or a thumb/index pick and it stays on your thumb.

What do you want to know?

I've got the strings and the peghead is totally rust free, there is one smaller crack at the lower right of the top but it has been fixed and is stable.

I am just this moment restoring a Böhm with glasbridge and it's for sale but I just have a problem with a few spots in the shellac. I even have a key for it, which is always missing.

    Re: Strap for bowl back

I add a sticky mat(meant for car dashboards) to stop it from moving and tilting and just sit with it.

  12. Re: Is there a treatment or cure for checking finishes

In the guitar world there are som peoples that like crazing so much, they freeze their instruments and then heat them, to produce it. It usually happens with Nitrocellulose Lacquer used a lot in th...
  13. Re: D'Addario Micro Headstock vs Micro Clip Free tuners

I´ve never seen that. Where do you find it?
  14. Re: D'Addario Micro Headstock vs Micro Clip Free tuners

I have a "hidden" tuner on a banjo, but only because it was on offer and it really only fitted the banjo.

If you use the D'Addarios no one will keep you from placing it under the head.

    I think...

Re: Help dating an old Sicilian mandolin

Look up other well documented Italian mandolins from 1890 to 1920 and the wood types are probably the same for yours.
Also the endpiece and tuners. Those things didn't vary very much within the...

  22. Re: What would you pay for this Meinel & Herold bowlback?

That's a nice looking mandolin. You don't have to do anything to the scratches but the bowl has at least one cracked seam, so probably(a lot) more, which is difficult to fix.

    I have restored a lot...

I just made a set of picks with different shaped points. Teflon is so slippery, that I glued the friction tape to it, before I cut it out.
