Re: What's GDAE and audible in a session?

I’m wondering if the session is just too darn big and you and the music might be better served by finding a smaller one

Re: Obessed with the tenor banjo

    211178

Well, I was warned. My mandolin teacher told me, in the Irish Trad world the mandolin was the gateway to the banjo. And of course it started with casual use, a “friend” gave me an...
  4. Re: Anybody ever make tuner buttons out of Fimo?

    Sue,
Nothing in your posts over the past year suggests any serious misbehavior. Maybe on the strength of having been a good girl all year, if new tuners showed up on your Christmas list, Santa would...
  5. Tenor guitar listed as a banjo on goodwill

Anyone have any thoughts, observations, musings about the shopgoodwill listing under banjos for the “ ES 4 string hollow body acoustic banjo”. I’m not going to bid on it, but it looks like it might...

    Re: Harmony Batwing prices?

Having owned one in the late 1970s, I can say with a high degree of confidence that something other than playability and tone would motivate a buyer at any price

    Shane MacGowan has passed (NMC)

I saw it in The Irish Times this morning that Shane MacGowan has passed away. He had a fine voice, was a great interpreter of songs and a fine song writer to my way of thinking.I’ll pull out the...
  8. Re: Any others here that started their mandolin/instrument later

I started playing guitar at about 39 years of age. I had just defended my dissertation and wanted to do something I really wanted to do — play an instrument. I had some mandolin lessons , too but...
  9. Re: Do instruments appreciate in value over time?

Well, I took my 1998 Martin OM-21 to a very reputable shop to consign to fund a custom build mandolin. The shop recommended that we list it at $2,250. That is twice what I paid for it all those...

Re: Suggestions for an Oval hole Mandolin

I have been very happy with my Northfield Calhoun. Check out the videos by Nate Roberts (classical), Marla Fibish (IRISH), Emory Lester (bluegrass) those persuaded me to buy one
  11. Re: Cheap tenor banjo — what to look for and look out for? NMC

I went with the Ludwig Capital. Going to have to have work on the bridge and nut to accommodate gdae strings but it is in pretty good shape, I think. Thanks for the input
  12. Re: Cheap tenor banjo — what to look for and look out for? NMC

    rcc,
I think the Vega looks too bright and shiny to not be one of the imports. But I’m very interested if you think any of them merit an hours drive to check out
    I sent a pm. Thanks!
    Ed
  13. Cheap tenor banjo — what to look for and look out for? NMC

I didn’t know where to post this and I hope it’s okay. No offense taken if it’s removed.
A friend gave me an old KAY tenor banjo that needed a tuner, a couple bracket hooks , bridge and nut. Got it...
  14. Re: Ye Vagabonds, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh. Great video

Love it, don’t understand a word of it. ‘ Wish I spoke Irish.
  15. Re: Has anyone heard about a crazy mandolinist named Frank Wakefi

I would refer you to the ACOUSTIC DISC download Of The KITCHEN TAPES by RED ALLEN and FRANK WAKEFIELD. I don’t think the cd is still available.
    Great stuff!

    Tell me about radius

So, I’m planning on contracting a custom build soon, and of course will consult with the builder on these matters but I’m wondering if you builders can explain the ins and outs of radius for me. So,...

    Re: Kentucky Army Navy?

I’ve only played one a couple of times at a local music store. I really liked it. My main mandolin is a Northfield Calhoun, which costs 4 x as much. The Calhoun has substantially more volume,...

Re: I would like to find a beater

    “ a model A Red Diamond”

Re: I would like to find a beater

For a beater, I have a Washburn A my wife gave me 38 years ago, which over the years I’ve probably spent twice what it cost in repairs having replaced the nut, the bridge and the tailpiece. But it’s...
