    Re: Hallelujah

Great stuff, and real fine voiced A-4! That one doesn't have the tubby tone at least from what I can tell through my junk laptop.
  2. Re: Oldest L-5! Lloyd Loar Signature!Analysis

They were varnished but some that went out later in the 20's or returned got the spruce up treatment of the lacquer spray.

    Re: Happy Birthday Big Dawg!!!

Yes, Happy B-day to one of the greatest musicians of our age:cool:
  4. Re: "Gibson" (not "The Gibson") script tailpiece cover

Yep, those covers did come on the F5-G from around 2000 or so as I just had total recall of the one I had!
  5. Re: 1989 Gibson F5-L ‘Custom Shop’ Jim Triggs

I thought the same before I read you're post! Sabe is out there and everywhere, they aren't the only "PROVEN" beings out there either. Ya think they like mandolin pickin? :mandosmiley:
  6. Re: "Gibson" (not "The Gibson") script tailpiece cover

Maybe off an A-9 or F-9?
  7. Re: What are some of the best Mandolins that you all have played?

Right on Eric, every Loar or Fern has something! And yep the Kimmel Fern I liked a lot. New owner is very pleased with it.
  8. Re: What are some of the best Mandolins that you all have played?

    Re: Old Gibson needs fixin'

I think it sold for a fair price. If one knows that these have the longest scale of any Gibson mandolin but with the wrong board from the factory as with the original board placement puts the bridge...

    Re: Old Gibson needs fixin'

I'd say it's a wide body A-1 from around 41-42 based on that rarer gold "Gibson" before that they were using white silkscreen "Gibson" on most lower end A's. Also the headstock looks like it is cut...
  11. Re: Vintage gold Gibson tailpiece cover?

Looks like your cover is original by the wear and overall look, If original yes indeed rare, some have been re-plated so "don't polish it as it rub off the soft gold" Gibson F-5's got these gold...

Re: A Bad Day at the Bandsaw

Yep, that should've never left Gibson looking like that.
  15. Re: 1913 Blackface F2 on Cooperstown, NY Craigslist

Looks to be a deal indeed, I think I paid 2500 for a 1912-13 black top F-2 around 1997! Pretty sweet instruments if an oval hole voice is your thing!
  16. Re: Help identifyiing this mandolin/what is it worth?

These can be pretty good mandolins, there was one on evilbay 2 weeks ago that didn't sell for 499.99 or BO. Hope that helps.
  17. Re: Looking for info regarding A style Gibson

Is that another depression era oddity with that burst?
  18. Re: 1938 Gibson Mandola, anyone seen another quite like this

I have a 1939 H-0 and it has the TL sized-style body but flat back with the back brace. Way different H-O look from the OP's.
  19. Re: 1938 Gibson Mandola, anyone seen another quite like this

Now that's an interesting one, definite depression Gibson going on there as that body is say a Gibson budget brand, but the Gibson stenciled in the peg head is very odd! I've seen a few Gibson's from...

Re: Obessed with the tenor banjo

YES they are a good bit of fun-annoying but fun! I have mine set up with the irish string tuning "same tuning as a mandolin", just different from the standard TB- dola type tuning.

    Re: Overspray (not mandolin specific)

Use a black light, it will show all discrepancies "hidden issues" when in doubt with ones own eyes. Yes nitro-lacquer is most used and back in the mid 20's onward, Gibson would refurbish older...
  22. Re: Are there already any pros playing the new 1923 reissue?

CJ Lewendowski "Po Ramblin Boys" just got one a few days ago. Not sure if he'll tour with it as he has a few Loars.

Re: How to sell an Antique Mandolin?

This is my take as I've owned many and had my paws on many, the OP's was more than likely constructed during the "Loar" period but shipped a few years later as there was a load of Loars that went out...
