    Re: custom saddles for Mandostrat

I set the saddles for one string and then filed the other string back until it intonated. Then raised the saddle up to position. I may get something later, for now this works well.

    Re: Straps for A style

I like the way the headstock holds the mandolin. It seems better than at the body.

    Re: Incredibly bizarre old banjo-mandolin

Yes missing a gear. A lot of older tuners pulled away from the gear, but turned in the correct direction. It would be called worm over, or worm under.

    Re: Custom Build Arriving Today!

Congratulations on both. I would wait to open in cold weather, warm weather I wouldn't worry about. Open it and play away.

    Re: Incredibly bizarre old banjo-mandolin

I think the tuners are on correctly, if reversed they would be way out on the end as off looking as they are now, maybe more so.
  6. Re: Name the tune? (The Mandolin Store Eastman Mandola demo)

    +1

The first thing I want to hear is all four strings, one at a time slowly to hear what they sound like. Then something slow to hear the instrument. If you want to play fast some that's OK, but...

    Re: adding a pickup to a 1927 gibson A

I use a short cord, it only has to go to the preamp that sits at the base of my mic stand. I carry an adapter in my case for use with any cord, and a spare cord with me. I don't carry a cord in my...

    Re: GDGD tuning

Tuning both G's up a full step, and both D's up a full step would add a lot more tension to the mandolin that already has a lot of tension, especially if you are using 11-40 strings. I wouldn't do it...

    Re: adding a pickup to a 1927 gibson A

My main gigging instrument is not a vintage Gibson, but I used a Tapastring jack so I didn't have to drill. It has worked well for many years and a lot of gigs. If I were to put a pickup in my...

    Re: GDGD tuning

Tuning down is easier on your instrument, but if you are going to play with a fiddle player you might want to change the strings to lighter strings if you go to AEAE.
  11. Re: String recommendations for Gibson Snakehead A Junior

The junior, while having the narrower neck of the Loar era mandolins, does not have a truss rod. I think you are right not using heavier strings. I like the GHS N250's for a slightly lighter string....

Re: Levin Aristocrat 2-Point, circa 1945

I would be happy with that too, nice sounding mandolin.

Re: New Eastman won't stay in tune - bad pegs?

I would add Rubner tuners to that list to make it a trio.

Re: New picks and pick noise

I was a BC pick user for many years, the last few years I prefer the Wegens. They are cheaper and sound better for me. I have primetone picks, and while they are good they are not as good sounding as...

Re: New Eastman won't stay in tune - bad pegs?

I expect to have to tune my mandolin often while I am playing it, so picking it up from sitting, tuning is a must.

    Re: Newb's first day

Lighter strings right away, at least until you get a good setup. If you have a capo put it on the first or second fret and tune the mandolin to standard, that will lessen the tension and should allow...

Re: Neck reinforcement vs a truss rod

I would use a longer drying time epoxy, it will be much stronger. I use 2 ton epoxy, there is better stuff out there, but this is available here.

Re: String preferences for Gibson A2-Z?

I like the GHS N250 or N270 pure nickel strings. I have the 250's on my '22 A2, and my Unicorn and the 270's on my Brentrup.

Re: Lifting bridge on a cheap acoustic guitar

The bolts, if they are there, should be thru the bridge plate. I would remove the nut and add a fender washer to make a larger surface area to hold better. The bridge plate will hold it just fine....

Re: Modern case options for teens Gibson A models

The 8851 has a neck cradle and is a half inch shorter in the body length because of this. It is also 10.5" wide instead of 10" for the 8853. Measure your mandolin and look at the specifications of...

Re: Hot k&k pickups and pickguards

I would opt to have the pickguard installed without drilling into the side. You could drill where the kerfing is so you have more support, but may have some sound transference if the top is so hot....

Re: Lifting bridge on a cheap acoustic guitar

The other option, since it is what it is, is to support the bridge with a couple of screws and washer/nut underneath on the bridge plate. I would take a thin feeler gauge and see how deep it is...

Re: Hot k&k pickups and pickguards

You may not have gotten the treble p/u pushed flat to the top and that will make them sensitive. If is not flat it will make it easier to come off, but you will have to clean the area before...
  25. Re: Weber brekke bridge thumbwheel and nut adjustment ?

Curious as to why you want to reduce the size of the adjuster. I could understand if you needed to lower the saddle and there was no room left, but you have plenty of room to lower your saddle.

    A...
