Parrish, Florida in the 70’s- Parties at the Massey farm-D Betts in his prime-the girls liked him
My, the memories are sweet.
Can’t say as how I find string changes on a slotted headstock to be any more tedious than a solid. I kind of like how the angle of the string as it’s routed from the nut to the hole in the shaft can...
There are/were jams at the back street pub in Beaufort- IMHO worth the drive from New Bern. One of the “great” bars on the eastern seaboard, especially for music people that also are into boats and...
Surprised there’s no mention of Greensky Bluegrass in this article: the mandolin as “driven” by Paul Hoffman is doing yeoman work in creating a sound that’s quite “rock” like in its’ intensity
My word, what understated excellence! I’d sure like to have one or both of those cuties next to my Stressless chair.
Not too shabby, John. Give me an update, at your leisure, as to when you want this mandola out yonder.
I got an entire truckload of #1 steam coal. Lucky me
1972, New Orleans, walked into this funky little club and there was this sweety singing, accompanying herself with an acoustic Gibson guitar. Chatted her up and she took me to see Muddy Waters...
Well, after playing Johns' latest creation 'till the finger tips are oh so sore, I thought that I'd relay impressions. If I were as fluent as Mr Jay of Mandolin Bothers, superlatives like "celestial...
Land o' Goshen, John, that sure is purty! Makes me proud to be in such close proximity to Hamlett Hollow.
Well, the chances are quite high that you could "successfully" build a mandolin, or guitar or whatever. The fly in the ointment is the probability that the instrument would not meet the criteria most...
Better hope that the D.O.J. doesn't come down on you like a thousand bricks for displaying these endangered materials.
Mr Cantrell: Coincidentally I've been speaking with "Sunburst" Hamlett about just such a project. That's the direction that I'm going to go (if he'll agree). You may have seen the 30's Epiphone...
I was at home ( a wood framed building) a mile or so from Hamlett Holler. I thought that John (AKA "Sunburst") was playing a joke on me; that he has climbed up on the roof of the house and was...
John Hamlett (aka "Sunburst") just about 100 miles north on US #29.
I'd suggest a Composite Acoustics "Cargo" guitar. No longer being manufactured, but available on the used market. Incredible tone in a parlor sized package.
I'll add another 5-star approval for Elderly. I've consigned several instruments with them, and netted more than I thought that I'd receive. A class act IMHO.
In the last couple of years I've sold two guitars via consignment with Elderly Music in order to fund a purchase of a custom instrument ordered from Mandolincafes' own "Sunburst" (a.k.a. John...
I bought a three legged folding camping chair (no arm rests) from Sierra Trading Post that works well for me. It's not real comfortable, but it's stable for using on other than a finished surface.
How about the Mandolin Cafe maintain ownership and "lease " the mandolin to members for a short time (a week?). I'd pay $100 or so for this opportunity to examine and play a first rate vintage "A"....
Okay, below is my experience in the "custom build" arena: John "Sunburst" Hamlett has built a mandolin/octave mandolin "set" and a 12-fret dreadnought guitar for me. It was a treat watching the...
As per the original post, ie. Cat "Yusuf" Stevens, I was under the impression that politics was a verbotim subject on this board. Perhaps it is a particular slant of politics that is prohibited?
For the last year or so we had the opportunity to listen to a FM radio network here in Virginia called "Bluegrass FM". I thought that it was pretty doggone good, with a mix of straight ahead...
I believe a mandola would be a good choice, especially if travel is a consideration. A cased instrument would be be more manageable size wise compared to an octave mandolin, and the register would be...
