  1. Re: Today in Mandolin History - August 5, 1890, Lawrence, KS Jour

You have to order your instrument with the "Squeaky option". Otherwise, it takes years to master the "Squeaky Technique".

Now pardon me, I have to get back to being Hideous and Trashy.

    Re: Strad-o-lin neo-log-ism

Went for $118.00 (plus $2.01 shipping & handling), the tuners, bridge, pick guard and tailpiece are worth more than that.

Did anyone (here on Mandolin Cafe) win the auction?

    Re: Strad-o-lin neo-log-ism

A common problem with Strad-O-Lin's. I have had two (like that) fixed. Was charged less than $50 for each repair. It's an easy fix. If your repairman charges $100, he is overcharging or he is paying...

    Re: Stradolin?

It's been poorly refinished. I'm not sure what is going on with that neck heel cap but it might be covering up a flaw or separation. I would worry about whether or not the neck angle was reset...

I'm pretty sure I mentioned that you got a good deal.

    Re: Blue Comet/United/ Sorkin Mandolin

I was told by an adman, "All advertising are lies". However, there was a time when Stradolins were real and solid woods.

While we're at it, there's one of those beautiful Tiger Flame high end...

You are correct. My bad. I should have said SOLID TOP, laminated back and sides. Those straight grained, Mahogany (almost painted light and dark even "striped") SOLs are always laminated. I have...

    Re: Blue Comet/United/ Sorkin Mandolin

The catalogue says the "fingerboard" is rosewood but the wear on the ebay mandolin shows it was a faux (painted) fretboard.

These may have morphed from solid tops and rosewood fretboards to...

    Re: A Stradolin

Out of the 22 Stradolins I have owned, only one had a bowed neck (I still own it, using it for parts) so while it is exceedingly rare, it can happen. Had the neck joint given way, it probably...

    Re: Stradolin bargain(?) alert

    Odd Duck... That's for sure.

The more Stradolins I look at (especially the off brand SOLs) the more I think there are several different companies that made them.

    Also, there is a possibility...

    Good eye Sue!

Definitely a different SOL Jr. in the video/sound clip. So the one for sale might need a set-up.

    Re: Strad-O-Lin bracing and fingerboards

There is an Armstrong branded Stradolin (currently on ebay). Unfortunately, it's badly damaged (at the tailpiece) and over-priced ($428.75). Also, incorrectly called a Harmony by the seller. Black...

    Re: Strad-O-Lin bracing and fingerboards

I agree! Thin the top & maybe a thinner (or scalloped) brace (or braces), or would you want to go so far as to put two braces running parallel to the F-holes? I worry just how much would be too much....
