  3. Re: Adding Veins to a Brescian Mandolin (Bowl back)

Thank you, Jo. I saw your video the other day of the fast forward Brescian build. Fun to watch. I was working on my Brescian build at the same time, and thought it would be nice to document the vein...
  4. Re: Adding Veins to a Brescian Mandolin (Bowl back)

I have a jet 10/20 thickness sander. I try to get them under 2mm. I don't think it would be a problem going a little thinner.
This is such an easy method. If the wood is going to split...it will...
  5. Adding Veins to a Brescian Mandolin (Bowl back)

Here is a step-by-step process for adding veins between the ribs of a bowl back mandolin.

Strips of a light-colored wood such as maple are thinned and bent the same as the ribs that form the bowl....

Re: Looking for 10 string tailpiece

Nothing wrong with an Allen. But it is a little pricy for my project. I like the looks of those handmade brass ones you see on Irish and UK instruments.
I only said "other than Allen" because I am...
  9. How do I simply send a photo in a private message?

I have been asked several time to send a photo in a private message. When I click on the photo icon, it asks a URL. If it is a photo from my own picture files, I am unable to attach it to the...

    Looking for 10 string tailpiece

    I am building a 10 string cittern.
It is always a challenge finding a tailpiece, other than a Allen.
Does anyone make them? Under $100?
    Thanks in advance.

Very similar to mahogany, but with a more interesting grain.

Re: Post a picture of what's on your bench?

    Thanks Jim.
The customer wanted a 330mm scale, basically 13". It is strung with Thomastik (of course).
I went a little lighter on the bracing because it has only 4 strings.

Just completed a nice little Selmer Style 4 string jazz mando. It is made of Sycamore and Spruce with a maple neck.

  16. Re: Brescian Mandola inspired by an 1805 illustration

I really don't Know, Joe. It is very dense and I worked it pretty thin. It is not objectionable, just different than spruce.
  17. Re: Brescian Mandola inspired by an 1805 illustration

Thanks, Tom. First off, it is strung with nylon so I can only compare it to some of the other Brescian mandolins that I have built. I guess what I notice most is the quick decay of the tone. It is...
  18. Brescian Mandola inspired by an 1805 illustration

I finally completed this Brecian Mandola. It was inspired by an illustration from 1805.
It is made with Huon pine soundboard and Queensland Maple neck and bowl. In keeping with the Auzie theme, I...

Here is a little more progress on the mandola. The neck is fully carved and attached to the bowl.
Since it is made with Australian woods, I added a vintage coin to the peg box for decoration. Emu...

Here are some progress photos. The ribs are added one at a time starting with the one in the middle. The geared tuners are in for a trial fit. The scale will be 380mm 15".

    Brescian Mandola 1805

I came across an interesting illustration from a book published in 1805. A young woman is seated playing a Bescian mandolin.

There are several things that intrigued me about this illustration: The...
