    Re: Neck relief and tone

hey pops1, Checking intonation before and after adjusting bridge height and truss rod, it stays very close. The bridge is compensated and intonation is consistently spot on for A + E, just a hair...

    Re: Neck relief and tone

I usually like to work with a ruler-straight neck… but my concern is that when I tighten truss rod to set a straight neck on this particular mandolin, the tone goes away.

    EVO frets. I love them...

    Re: Neck relief and tone

thanks all for the feedback. J. Sloan, of all the fret jobs I've done, this one will be undertaken with the most thought, care (and notes). I've been adjusting neck relief over the last few months,...

    Re: Neck relief and tone

I’ve been thinking about this… is it the high neck relief or the slack truss rod that’s contributing to tone?

    Neck relief and tone

So... I have this 2016 Kimble 2-point that has the most delightful tone of any mandolin I've played. It's a keeper for me. I've been messing with neck relief for a while to make it a bit more...

Re: Can I tell the weather with my instruments?

This post made me laugh because I do notice my mandolin (and guitar and banjo) is definitely affected by humidity and (I think?) barometric pressure.

As others have noted, it drops pitch as the...

    Re: Thoughts on this bridge?

thanks all for input so far. I am not keen to modify an original bridge unless the owner wants to do that. Less risky option would be to fit and try a new CA bridge and see if that brightens the tone...

    Re: Thoughts on this bridge?

Neck angle looks fine, and mandolin is ok in terms of humidity. Set-up is ok but knowing the reputation these mandolins have for volume and tone, I am wondering if a new, correctly-fitted bridge with...

    Thoughts on this bridge?

My friend’s 1989 Buckeye. It is a gorgeous mandolin but I have always wondered if it might benefit from a new bridge, as the original (while well-fitted and at correct angle) looks like it’s on...

Re: E string setup at bridge

Thanks Dale. I am hearing you suggest that you want the strings leaving the front end of the saddle cleanly with no groove, while the back (tailpiece) end sits firmly in a groove. I have been...

    E string setup at bridge

Hi all - I am lucky enough to own a Collings MT2 and a Northfield Big Mon. I often notice that on the E course, I get an inconsistent tone between the two strings. This is most pronounced on the E...
  14. Re: Sound: opinions sought on technique vs instrument, i.e. anti-

I have an Eastman MD315 and faced the same situation you mention. I succumbed to MAS and bought a used Northfield Big Mon. It really depends how much your $ is worth to you but I’m not convinced the...

    Re: 7th fret problem

After all the troubleshooting, I agree with CWRoyds this could be a wolf tone. There is a subtle and intermittent WT on the E string... could be the same thing at 7-th fret G string. When picked the...

    Re: 7th fret problem

Thanks for all the great input. I chased this issue from tip to tail... straighten twisted bridge and re-ramp string slots / new strings / crowned fret #7 / fixed buzz at tailpiece / nut inspection /...

    Re: 7th fret problem

I appreciate all the suggestions. The main reason I do the luthier work myself is because I live in the boonies and I have had a guitar butchered by a local “professional” once in the past. I am...

    Re: 7th fret problem

Thanks Pops1 - I have tried shifting the bridge position but it throws the intonation out on the other 3 courses. I will fiddle with it this weekend but is seems like something funky with the bridge...

I have tried moving the bridge position but the intonation problem between G and D strings remains apparent at 7th fret.

What I did notice is that there is a slight twist to the bridge;...

    Re: 7th fret problem

Good question! I honestly don’t remember. The new larger EVO frets made the instrument so much better... I found the original small frets very difficult to get a clean note from so I likely wound not...
