    Re: Grover tuners

His A style mandolin has a different style head and uses F style tuners. He can't swap them to make them work. A style posts are all the same length, F style tuners are not. The F style worm under...

    Re: Grover tuners

Take a look at this thread from a few years ago. We pretty much determined all of the worm over f style tuners available. I even mention the Grovers being backwards.

    Re: Grover tuners

My eyes just opened. Your builder used Grover worm over tuners. They didn't go to the trouble of making a real worm over tuner. The new ones will always turn backwards. They used the same worm gear...

    Re: Grover tuners

Yes, the tuners should turn the correct way BUT for some reason some builders in eastern Europe use the tuners that turn the wrong way. Post a picture of the tuners so we can see the brand. It may be...

    Re: Am i being unreasonable?

Before this goes any farther we'll just assume that the OP got the information they needed. I don't want this to become a Posting Guideline issue.

    Re: Grover tuners

The late Cafe member Paul Hostetter has a great explanation of tuners on his site. It's right here.

Re: Need help to identify this

Without pictures of your instrument this is basically an impossible challenge. Regal made a whole lot of instrument styles. The brand name has undergone at least three if not more iterations where it...

    Re: Grover tuners

How about a picture? Tuners should turn the correct direction.

    Re: RIP Barry Kratzer

Rest In Peace Barry. He's been a fixture on the Cafe for years and a source of instruments for many. It's a sad loss.

    Re: What kind of Mandolin

The value isn't anything to worry about. It's rare but that doesn't make it valuable. In this case it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

Gotoh apparently is making a geared uke peg...

    Re: Gibson, Tonk & Kalamazoo

Listed in Gruhn's Guide to Vintage Guitars as being made for Tonk Brothers in Chicago circa 1935. It's a model 5284. It is basically the same as the Kalamazoo models.

    Re: What kind of Mandolin

Janet Davis Music (before they went out of business) used to sell these small diameter geared banjo tuners. I believe they were made in Germany. They probably would have fit.

I could be wrong about that but the tuners are what dates it.

    Re: Harmony h35

It's not much of a guess actually. The model was introduced in 67 but those tuners weren't used until sometime around 1970. They were out of business by 1975 but they ceased production before that....

The tailpiece looks German to me as well. Those banjo pegs would be a bear to keep in tune.

Nobody has ever had a definitive answer to these numbers. The part to the right of the H is generally accepted as the model number, the numbers to the left have been assumed to be some part of their...

Re: Your favorite mandolin tuning tips?

I'm not sure this matters much because at any given time there are only three mandolins that are in tune in the entire world and David Grisman owns two of them.
