  1. Re: Neapolitan Mandolin Build in Naples - November 2022

    Thanks, Sebastiaan...this is very interesting.

I've had a bunch of MOR Neapolitan mandolins from the Lanfranco, DeMureda, Stridente, Ferrari crew that I bought to tinker around with.

    The...
  2. Re: Neapolitan Mandolin Build in Naples - November 2022

Thanks, Sebastiaan...it is very interesting to see the fret slot cutting jig.

    A clever jig.

My fear is that the saw blade would eventuall enlarge the slot that it is riding in.

    Or are the...

Re: Film On Ebay Auction- 1960 Bowlback

This is a curiosity, too, with the "The Michigan" nameplate.

I have a "The Michigan" labeled mandobanjolin that I was told came a Toronto outpost of the Beare & Son firm.

    Though I wouldn't have...

Re: Thats a suprise Regal Reverse Scroll

We've got it here, Graham, thanks just the same.

The IGA grocery chain carries it, as I'm sure it's likely in my local shop. Way up on the top shelf in Aisle 10.

The Kraft brand markets it as...

    Great stuff, Sebastiaan.

    A couple procedural questions...

What was the point of the extra material left on the neck blank for so long....?

I'm assuming to provide something heft for...

You can't fly with a 2lb jar of Vegemite, though.

Got to think ahead when packing your dop kit, Graham.

Re: Thats a suprise Regal Reverse Scroll

For those of us born in the Space Age, Graham, food that comes in a squeezeable tube needs no explanation.

The US might have been locked in a Space Race with the USSR, but we are simultaneously...

Re: Washburn Bowl back neck re-set

    Thanks for posting this project!

It is interesting to see the dowel joint on your AC. The one I have here awaiting its revival has a dovetail neck joint.

    I'd encourage consideration of what...

  11. Re: Neapolitan Mandolin Build in Naples - November 2022

John, thanks for weighing in with this question, as you recall it was the topic of conversation quite recently in another thread as to the role that these linings play in bowlback construction.

    I...

    Re: Vega Cylinderback

A few years back, I took in a friend's Vega pair, a cylinderback mandola and mandocello for a summer while he was traveling.

Mellow, is quite rightly the term.

    We considered sneaking back to...

    Re: Bowlback tuner problem

To add even more obscurity to the discussion, I just measured a Washburn and an AC bowl I have in my junkyard.

Both come in a 7/8" spacing.

The AC are inset tuners though.

    Finding a...
  15. Re: Neapolitan Mandolin Build in Naples - November 2022

In 1896 the DeMeglio shop produced in excess of 1200 mandolins, and possibly considerably more, based on the labels and serial numbers.

The build quality on the DeMeglios is quite good at such...

  18. Re: MAS attack - L Yosko labeled turn of the century mandolinetto

    Could be.

That blotch pattern celluloid(?) is very similar to some new material I've purchased for replacing scratchplates on a couple old bowlbacks.

The thin gap between the scratchplate and...

    Re: Strad-O-Lin T-Shirts!

    I love the design.

It kind of reminds me of an old Schmergel Devastator t shirt I have but it's buried somewhere in my dresser and I can't find it.

    Brno?

Of course, the Tugendhat House for we architects.

And now some mandolin to go along with it.

    Thanks!

  21. Re: MAS attack - L Yosko labeled turn of the century mandolinetto

    Fair play to you, Sue.

Such a curious looking instrument. The hefty upper bout on the mandolinetto is just great...along with the assymetrical scratchplate.
How weird and wonderful is that?

    Re: Vega Bowlback Serial #22912

    Thanks, Nick.
I was asking because I simply don’t know myself.

The banjo SNs on that site appear to continue right on through ‘Vega purchase’ in 1904.
Vega was likely making mandolins before...
