Reviving this thread because a Benko archtop guitar has just appeared on Kijiji in Montreal and I thought people might want to see it. Certainly is different. Clearly carved top and back.
Here's...
I think that I would also look for advice about years. I remember reading on the cafe that Gibson changed the neck angle around 1915 or 16 so that the later ones were better. Don't quote me on this...
I don't have any tenors left at the moment, having sold my last. I only play them casually. But I still have my Kala bari. I think it's a very nice alternative. ...
Just for matter of interest, my Pomeroy neck is rounded, not v-shaped at all. Pomeroys are x-braced, however. Mike Black does both.
I just want to add to this thread another Alexander Dennis mandolin that has appeared on Kijiji in Winnipeg. Here's the link:

Nothing better than a handmade gift.
This is a new old time tune, John Grimm's Butterfly Waltz. It's on his new album.

You're all right, it is a great tonic for these times.
Last night it was relatively warm here in Toronto and five of us had a jam around a backyard fire. I wore a mask even though we were outside...
Brian, the Pomeroy is swell. Just a beautiful instrument. I've only had it a few months.
Yes, a few minutes distraction can be good for work. Better than being on the 'net. (except for the...
Eric, I built that flat top. It came out quite well and I enjoy playing it. Use it for travel sometimes and when I visit schools for work. I posted it below, though I recarved the neck afterwards...

Well, your knowledge is threatening, Jim.
And I too, relish the stories of how I came to one instrument or another. if only they weren't so boring to most other humans. the cat finds them...
Don't know how I missed that threat, Jim!
Something I've done as a substitute, or a way of controlling my own mandolin desires, is to collect photographs of mandolin players. such as this one.

I've never thought of myself like this before but you might say I'm a "linear" collector. That is, I've owned many mandolins in time, sometimes just out of curiosity, but have then sold them to buy...
After I wrote an article on old time mandolin for the Old Time Herald, Mr. Strecher wrote a letter to the editor complaining of the people I left out, including himself. I was happy to stand...

I think that when one is in that much doubt, the safest thing is not to. Avoids regret. At least until you change your mind.
My only vintage case is also chipboard and like Zach I put in my own...
Lovely sounding mandolin. Play in good health, as my mother would say.
I've now posted photos in the Stradolin group. Yesterday I passed it on to a happy new owner.
Love these duets, Adrian!
Every day is a little better because of Mandolincafe. Thanks, Scott!
