  1. Re: Bernie in Newfoundland (no mando content)

I think it's the funniest of these I've seen actually.
  2. Re: Do great looking mandolins have to sound better?

This is a picture of a mandola Jody Stecher won in an Ebay auction. He talks about it in his fine interview for MC in 2010.

  3. Re: Do great looking mandolins have to sound better?

Beautiful naturally figured wood is indeed lovely. If that is defined as 'fancy' by wood people, then I certainly accept that, but I like it because it is natural. I'm in no doubt that wood can be...
  4. Re: Do great looking mandolins have to sound better?

I've noticed the word 'fancy' has cropped up quite a bit here.

I dislike most things that are fancy. I am a man of plainer taste, but I admire good craftsmanship and artistry. Depends what you...

    Re: Pick Thickness

I think it depends what kind of music you play, and indeed how you play.

I am Scottish, and I nowadays use a .88 Dunlop pick. For my guitar and octave mandolin playing I use either a .73 Dunlop...

    Re: Light or Medium strings?

You may find lighter strings easier on your fingers, which can help your playing.

    Re: Fylde Signature Octavius Strings

The simplest thing to do is buy individual guitar strings. I have a Sobell octave mandolin and that's what I've always done.

    Re: Scottish Reels

The 72nd's Farewell To Aberdeen is a a 4/4 pipe march, rather than a reel. It is also called The Boy's Lament For His Dragon in Scotland, but they are not exactly the same. Incidentally, the 72nd...

I realise that my experience might be different from many of you, but I actually got into Tony's music through this time. 'Backwaters'...

    Oh no.

    RIP. I loved his music.
  15. Re: Backing Irish music with guitar after playing mandolin melody

I think you should look at something like this:

  16. Re: Phone attachments for making videos. Get better sound

"The other idea might be to change the room you're recording in. A better sounding room could be a tech free sound upgrade"

I certainly think that experimentation with rooms is worth doing....

  18. Phone attachments for making videos. Get better sound

Has anyone got good suggestions for useful attachments for your mobile phone for getting a better sound if you're making videos?

I've had to make some instructional videos lately, and we're...
  19. Re: La Machine and Andy Cutting (no mandolins though)

    French music, right?

Andy is good at this kind of thing. He does it with Blowzabella - an English band who play a lot of French stuff.

  20. Re: Robert godin receives the order of canada

In addition to the Seagull mandolin I've had for about 3 years, I recently picked up a Seagull guitar which a friend was selling.
Not expensive, but really nice to play.

    So I've got to say...
  21. Re: Great quote about instruments from Gordon Lightfoot

You can read 'wires' two ways. Strings, certainly, but also electronics.
  22. Re: Paddy Keenan. Se Mo Laoch, TG4. Essential viewing!

Yeah, it's always great to see footage of the Bothies. Still unrivalled, probably the best band ever.
Nice to hear from you. Hope you're all well.

Time for the annual bump of some of my favourite Christmas music.
  24. Re: Nordic/Finnish/Swedish folk music recommendation

I have been bumping up this thread for the last 10 years at about this time.
Some of Sweden's top artistes doing Christmas music. Really delightful.
