I put the Thomastiks (Heavy, whatever they call that) on the MTO last night, played it for about a half hour, tuned it back up and put it away. Came home today, every string was still in tune except...
I’m laughing at you only to hide the fact that I don’t know what I’m talking about. On my 21.5 I went from a 12 to a 15 and it was much brighter. Trying a 14 next time.
Ditto and I use it on a Collings A.
Exactly the point. Like having track day with the Miata club and Michael Schumacher shows up in his qualifying Ferrari. Cool to see for a few minutes but not the reason you showed up for the day.
I’m pretty sure Gilchrist stopped coming here because he kept getting skipped over on the traveling pick sampler.
Moneys, silk and steel and nickel bronze have varying degrees of almost drastic change. I really don’t like the sound of the MT2O with PB now.
Better NOT try a Collings Oval if you don't want to spend any money!!!!!! (You see what I did, yanks?)
I have a set on mine now, I think. They mellow it similar to the Silk and Steel and Monels. I liked them but not quite as much as the ones I just listed.
I think those Americana's only come in 3.0mm if I remember correctly.
I get a little longer out of them than I do a phosphor bronze.
lol, yanks. I was waiting for that. I actually spoke to Max about a custom about a year or so ago and I may do it one day, but really 3 is more than enough for me. Someone on here has a natural...
They should be here Wednesday, Ill get them on ASAP. Don't listen to the noise on the Silk and Steel's, especially from people who haven't put them on an MTO (whose personality they fit perfectly,...
Nice catch, I am an unabashed fan of the Collings ovals. My favorite on them is GHS Silk and Steel, second is Monels. I'm going to try Thomastiks on it again this week.
I'll just go ahead and assume this is some sort of bad joke.
Enjoy the fingerpicking, CBF!!
This is very impressive.
My favorite part:
"The string tension on a mandolin is very high, and there are double courses." - You just said this to a guy who posted about liking to fingerpick his mandolin on a forum about...
Hey CBFrench, look at that - Captain Obvious just gave you permission to enjoy your mandolin the way you want in your own home even though the overwhelming majority doesn't agree with you.
Have...
Thank you. Those string gauges are so close to what I'm looking for that I think some field testing is in order.
Does anyone know of an easily accessible string set for short-scale octave (mandola strings) in a material other than phosphur bronze?

double post.
23 A Jr as evidence. Bought from the family of the original owner. Original bridge (not adjustable) and ebony nut. Strings were so old when I got it they disintegrated upon contact. Refret, set-up...
