    Re: Parlour King 19" tenot

Its been ages since I started this instrument, but I've been slowed down by the weather of late - it's been very humid here in Queensland and that has prevented me gluing things together for weeks on...
  5. Re: Build thread - Forster 8 string Irish bouzouki

This will be the last part of the thread for a few weeks as the bouzouki is now at the spray job, just a few miles from my workshop.

The 10 string that was stolen in 2018 was found last year. Because of lockdown its taken months to get the gzouk back to ship shape. Currently, she's being looked after by Adam Rhodes up in Glasgow....

Re: Guitar Body Octave Mandolin for Irish?

Seems to me you may be over complicating things.

How much sustain gets in the way is down to your technique and playing style rather than the instrument itself. This instrument has a lot of...

Re: Guitar Body Octave Mandolin for Irish?

Most of the guitar-bodied 8 strings I've made have been long scale, but I've made a few OM's. Here is one from a few years back..

Re: High Quality Short Scale Tenor Guitar?

21.5" or thereabouts is great for CGDA, and yes, I do make a lot of tenors these days. If you've not sat through them all, here is a playlist of my tenor and plectrum guitars on YouTube:

  10. Re: Build thread - Forster 8 string Irish bouzouki

Ta Gary. I never thought of it like that. Its my version of Stefans' bouzouki neck joint which he came up with building dulcimers. Stefan used to make the neck and block separate and add them...
  11. Re: Build thread - Forster 8 string Irish bouzouki

Binding is the next job. These days I use the "superglue" method. It takes longer, but the results are great. But if you spill the stuff it makes such a mess hence everything is covered in protective...

The Celtic mandolin is coming along nicely. It seems so little compared to my old Celtic mandolins, but it's not- it's a regular Sobell size.

The fretboard went on today, so...

  14. Re: Build thread - Forster 8 string Irish bouzouki

yes, of course, you'd have to.

Its all a question of stiffness and mass. The carved arched back of a Gibson mandoin has no bracing, it doesn't need it. This heavily arched back doesn't need it...

  21. Re: Build thread - Forster 8 string Irish bouzouki

Depends on which parts you're talking about Simon. And how thick. Generally, if you increase side and back mass in relation to the top, the effect on volume will be greater than the effect on tone....
