  1. Re: What are the chances that a moderately-priced mandolin sounds

Should you upgrade? I don't know.

I'll say this. I just bought a Kentucky KM-755 (because I got a really good deal, just showed up yesterday), and I already owned an Eastman MD315. And those...
  2. Re: Mike Compton demonstrates his 2008 Duff F-5 mandolin

Mandolin sounds real good. But, I'm only a few years into mandolin playing, and maybe I'm missing something, so I might be crucified for this... but the playing sounds really sloppy and and inexact,...

  4. Re: Strategies (or contraptions) to tame the flying fingers?

Exhibit A of flying pinkyitis (and one of the most unflattering angles of myself I've yet seen). Keep your eye on the pinky:

    Re: Trapeze tailpiece

Kind sir, I gently pointed out that it was an old thread. i did not shame you, I did not criticize you, I did not object. I do not disagree that old threads can be very informative.

    The problem...
  6. Strategies (or contraptions) to tame the flying fingers?

I have a flying finger problem, they go everywhere, my pinky in particular.

Aside from just having "good discipline" and being aware of it, any advice for working on taming them... somewhere Chris...

Re: PSA Kentucky KM-755 at Amazon

Well... I just looked again, and the last one available seems to have gone back up to the full retail.

Which is kind of what I expected from the algorithm, but for a good 20 mins it was still...

    PSA Kentucky KM-755 at Amazon

I've been watching the price on these go down for a couple of weeks. Today it hit the "too good to pass up" price point and I ordered one, will A/B it with my Eastman MD-315 to decide which stays on...

Just so you know, you're responding to a three year old post, which is itself a response to a post from 2013.

    Re: Flatiron truss rod wrench?

I went through a similar thing a couple of months ago, but forgot what I ended up using so didn't chime in sooner. But I did have a chance to look into it now (because I'm procrastinating from doing...

    Re: Advice on mandolin Upgrade

I know that some people dig the Breedloves, and my experience with them is a sample size of one Breedlove Premier OF. that I played alongside the Kentuky KM-500 and an Eastman MD-505 that I was...

    Re: Buzzy note

Did you use the fret rocker? Is that fret high, or are you just guessing?

If it's not seated correctly, you should be able to see, or feel, a little gap under the fret. If the bottom is sitting...

Bourgeois calls it Aged-Tone, Martin calls it Vintage Tone System, just their particular marketing lingo for torrified.

Re: How do you play “split” beat

It is also just a D major triad doubling the D root if you play all four strings, so it's a possibility... though usually there would be 0s on the middle strings if you were meant to play them, yes.

Re: How do you play “split” beat

You could play the same thing by playing the open D string and the F# on the 9th fret of the A string... it might just be a weird transcription choice. You could thereby just play it on the two...

Re: How do you play “split” beat

That's the kind of thing that you might find on a fingerstyle guitar arrangement. If you're playing with a pick, you'd have to either do a bit of hybrid picking and get the e strings with a finger...

Re: What makes strings go sharp?

Yeah, that sounds like the nut is binding. Or maybe the string windings are overlapping and the string is ramping up onto the overlap.

Does not sound like the kind of thing that new tuners would...

Re: Eastman MD850 vs Kentucky KM615

I spent some time looking into the Kentucky 800 series mandolins a while back... there's practically no information on them from users. Not sure why, but they don't seem to be terribly popular.
  20. Re: First Mandolin Choice, what is available to me now

    Some thoughts:

You may be overthinking the rusty strings on the KM-150. Strings get rusty sometimes.

I had a KM-250 and a KM-500 (pretty much the same save for some cosmetics), that's what I...

Re: David Benedict's new dream mandolin

Pretty nice "freebie." Though, the couple comments about Oliver letting him "play it for free," sounds like maybe he's not going to be keeping it? Also, the references to "Loar specs," but it also...
  22. Re: How do YOU play the C section of Jerusalem Ridge?

    I guess I miscounted.

Ummm... as a starting point? Walk before you run, and such? What is frequently referred to as scaffolding in educational/pedagogical discussions.
  23. How do YOU play the C section of Jerusalem Ridge?

That high C is a bear. Just slide your pinky up. Shift your whole hand?

Re: Tailpeice alignment- is this a problem?

Check that it's not loose. If it is, you'll have to address that.

If it's tight, put some new strings on it and play the thing. The only job of the tailpiece is to hold the strings in place,...
