Re: Cumberland bridge on Loar LM500 ?

I replaced the bridge on a LM 500 that had a sagging saddle with a new CA bridge.
The Loar's bridge wasn't well fitted to the top, and I fit the CA bridge meticulously. However, the tone didn't...
  3. Re: String recommendation for Northfield NF-F5S ?

I have Curt Mangan's phosphor bronze on my NF F5S. Bluegrass series.
I use the set with the 16 gauge for the A's, seems to give me the best balance across the strings.
    They sound great, and last...
  4. Re: String suggestion for Flatiron Performer/Festival series

Curt Mangans. Good tone, settle in quickly, and last a long time. Lot's of option on gauges too.

Re: Tweaks for weak sounding E strings

    Thanks all!

0.115's on the E's and 0.14's on the A's have balanced it out pretty well.
Adjusting the pickup height helped a bit too.

A's still seem a bit strong, but probably OCD more than...
  7. Re: Yet another string thread, but for electric mandos!

Thanks all! I'm needing loop ends for my eight string El Rey.

That's why I asked about Monel, the Sam Bush set would have the gauges I want.
Monel's a nickel alloy right? Or is there not...

    Setting pickup height?

Is there a rule of thumb for setting the pickup height? (Lollar humbucker.) Or just trial and error?

It's currently set pretty high and close to the strings, (I hit it with the pick a bit), and...
  9. Yet another string thread, but for electric mandos!

There's a lot of string threads, but nothing recent that I could find specifically for electric mandolins.
What brands/alloys do you prefer for electric mandolins? Nickel, nickel bronze, Monel,...

Re: Tweaks for weak sounding E strings

Rick, it's gorgeous, the neck and playability is like an acoustic, so comfortable for me.
The tone control is very effective too.

Thanks Andrew, from everything I've read, it sounds like the...

Tweaks for weak sounding E strings

Couldn't resist and got myself an Eastman El Rey.
Having a lot of fun with it, but, as mentioned by some, do notice slightly thinner sound from the E strings.

Looking for advise on tweaking it...

    Re: 7th fret problem

One more vote for changing strings.....you could try a different gauge as well.

Also check the slots on the bridge saddle.
If the saddle is leaning forward slightly it may not have a clean...

    Re: Point of Diminishing Returns

    I agree with other replies.
When learning a new tune I've learned to recognize when to stop working on it. (Fingers seem to get clumsy or just can't seem to get through a tough part.)

Mandolinstew, how loud is the Dillion acoustically? I was avoiding semi-hollow in favor of quiet late-night practicing, but I sure like the look of them.

    Re: Mandobird pickup hum-Bad ground?

Yes, the scratch plate is foil covered, but not the inside of cavity.
Still curious why touching/removing the one screw stopped the hum.

    Mandobird pickup hum-Bad ground?

I've had a mandobird for quite some time with no issues. Plugged it in the other day and had loud hum from amp. Tried different cords and amps, no change.

Touched one of the screws on the back...
