    Re: Wide neck Mandolins ?

Coming from playing classical guitar, the typical mandolin neck presented a real challenge, so like others I thought I should look for one with a wider neck. That search brought me to this thread and...

Thanks Scott for the arrangements, I have found many of your arrangements to be fun for me as a new mandolin player.

Re: Who can I thank for the O'Carolan Project?

If a person is relying mostly on tabs, midi might be a big help, but in my case coming from classical guitar and able to read standard notation I found it easier to get the timing correct, but being...
  4. Re: Bought a recording king for kid. Really impressed

    LynnB,

Based on my experience, once it's set up properly you will end up with an instrument that will play as well as many expensive instruments, but the sound/tone is already baked in by the...
  5. Re: Bought a recording king for kid. Really impressed

I purchased a Recording King Dirty 30's Mandolin, but it played horribly when I received it, but after doing a complete setup, and changing the strings, it was very easy to play.

    This instrument...
  6. Re: Beginners, how many set up your mandolin successfully on your

It appears that many folks are changing a few strings at a time for fear of the bridge moving. I don't see this as a problem, I just stick a small piece of blue painters tape along the edge of the...

Who can I thank for the O'Carolan Project?

I have downloaded the tunes from the O'Carolan Project, and as a beginner have found playing them a real enjoyment. Who do I thank for making them available?

    Re: Irish mandolin for beginners.

I agree that either Kentucky or an Eastman would give you good quality for your money. I am a beginner on mandolin, and have been playing some of the O'carolan tunes on an Eastman MD404-BK, which is...

Re: Eastman MD404 Truss rod question

I gave the truss rod nut 1 last tweak this morning, put the cover back in place, and am calling it done for now. It plays very well.

    Thank's for the help meow-n-dolin

Re: Eastman MD404 Truss rod question

You were correct. I just tryed it again, and was able to continue turning the truss rod nut. Obviously the wood is giving up. The gap is almost where I want it, 0.002 in. more and it will be perfect....

Re: Eastman MD404 Truss rod question

    Thank's for the reply.

You may be correct. I have been thinking the same thing, because I believe the truss rod works by compressing the lower, while stretching the upper portion of the neck...

    Eastman MD404 Truss rod question

I just received an Eastman md404, and found the neck relief to be a bit too much, so I started to tighten the truss rod, but I didn't get far before it stopped turning and felt like it was locked...
  14. Re: Beginners, how many set up your mandolin successfully on your

I just set up an inexpensive Recording King Dirty 30's A-style, but being new to mandolins, I took my time. If you are doing it yourself, there's no hurry. I made a few changes, played it for a few...

    Re: Hearing aids

You shouldn't need to "get used to it," if your hearing aids are programed correctly for music.

I am currently wearing Phonak Bolero Marvel rechargeable aids purchased used off Ebay, and because...

    Re: Hearing aids

I also wear hearing aids, but I learned to do my own programming, which really helped.
I created a dedicated music program which has all the digital processing off like noise reduction, whistle...

  18. Need audio tracks for Mandolin Blues from Memphis to Maxwell Stre

I recently acquired the book Mandolin Blues from Memphis to Maxwell Street, but it's missing the CD with the audio tracks. It's published by Hal Leonard, and they will not sell the CD separately. Any...
  19. Re: Recording King A-style mandolin on the cheap.

Well this has been a lot of fun for $140.00, and I just learned my first tune, a basic version of Colored Aristocracy. It's become obvious that the finger calluses developed playing classical guitar...
  20. Re: Recording King A-style mandolin on the cheap.

With today's automated machine tools, if a manufacturer gets their design right, selects good materials, and does a reasonable job of assembly, the end product should be pretty good. In the case of...
  21. Re: Recording King A-style mandolin on the cheap.

Well shortly after doing the setup on my Dirty 30's Mandolin, I received Robert Melduum's book on how to setup a mandolin, and I have to say that it's very complete, and even if you never plan to do...

Another tool that is great for lowering and rounding the bottom of nut slots is a welding tip cleaner. They have a collection of round serrated rods of increasing diameter that are perfect for this...
  23. Re: Recording King A-style mandolin on the cheap.

    Davidkos,

My mandolin has a solid plastic nut, so rather than trying to sand the bottom, I used one of my thin triangle shaped swiss needle files to lower each string. I used a folded strip of...

  25. Recording King A-style mandolin on the cheap.

OK folks, after lurking here for a while I just purchased a very inexpensive blemished "store return" Recording King A-shape mandolin from an Ebay seller. It only had a couple of tiny marks near one...
