Re: Darryl Wolfe selling off stuff

IIRC, Scott T is no fan of these conversions. You may want to consider who you might be casually insulting, just because they hold a different opinion from you about the historical significance of...

  3. Re: Wonderful Gibson 1910's Oval Holes (no love?)

I couldn't agree with the OP more.
Of all my old Gibsons, based on the combination of playability, volume and tone, I think the best overall I have is the 1915 A1.

    Re: Love for Ovals

That's interesting to hear. I've never played a long-necked oval, but the aesthetic of a bridge just below the sound hole always looked a little imbalanced to me.

Re: A question for the Gibson history experts!

[Photo below shows a Gibsonian band with Loar holding a black-faced H4 mandola with a nickel truss rod cover. Behind him is a 1921-period K5 mandocello with nickel truss rod cover. Notice the two F5s...

    Re: Shipping

I experienced a FedEx disaster this Spring when I shipped a '17 A4 and it broke at the neck joint in transit. I immediately refunded the buyer, who was an excellent person to work with through this...

Read this interview waiting to board a plane this morning, then listened to Homer & Jethro Live ('68), and Back to Back with Tiny Moore. Amazing playing, and the live banter had me cracking up....

    Re: eBay anxiety

I have a friend who once made an eBay purchase of a Mini-Disc Recorder (this was the late 1990s), and all he received was an 1/8" cable/jack. When he contacted the seller, that person immediately...

    Re: Randy Meisner @ 77 - RIP

Don Henley is still alive. Is he not playing with them anymore?

BTW, I love that '74 pic of Phil in front of the Wall of Sound. Peak Phil.

Seriously. A "Gilchirst" is something you might find for sale in Times Square.

    Re: Questions about tuning

Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to respond.
I'll start by adding some graphite powder to the nut slots the next time I change my strings.

    Questions about tuning

My mandolins get played every day, so I hang them on the wall for quick access (and because I love to look at them). More often than not, they've gone sharp while waiting to be played.

    Is going...

Re: Considerations for buying early F4?

I've heard a lot of posters rave about their '21 and '22 A2s. Makes me curious to try one.

Re: 1910 A-1 with fantastic wide grain

    Very cool looking top.

But I always feel a little spooked about these early Gibsons with that common crack running down the headstock. Not sure if it's the wood used in the center strip of the...

Re: 1911 2-point F4 with a Torch and Wire Inlay

Looks like some poor soul may have bought it on the Reverb listing in Japan.
They may have to have a word with the person who bought it the day before from an eBay seller in Florida.

    1911 2-point F4 with a Torch and Wire Inlay

This is only the second one of these I've ever seen for sale: A 1911 F4 with the modern 2-point body shape, but with the Torch and Wire Inlay on the headstock.
Nice price, but some strange mistakes...
  20. Re: 1923 A1 Snakehead with Tortoise Back Binding???

Searching in the f5journal database, I see now that there were at least a couple of batches of tortoise celluloid back bound A1s in 1923. I learn something new every day. I like how on these...
  21. 1923 A1 Snakehead with Tortoise Back Binding???

From what I understand, Gibson produced several batches of F2s in 1922 and 1923 that include Tortoise binding on the back. I've got one, as does Dan Beimborn (#72838).

Just listed on Reverb is a...

    1928 Gibson F4 on eBay - Scam?

I'm always leery of strange listings on eBay. This beautiful '28 F4 has a "starting price" of $16.21, but if you scroll down you'll find that you can only buy this for a set price of $3765 (USD) and...

One of the last Paddlehead A Jrs?

There's a 1924 A Jr. in the Classifieds with a Paddlehead configuration. I thought '24 was well into the Snakehead A-style period, but clearly I was wrong. But this one might literally be among the...
