    Re: Shure sm57

As the 81s have been around so long you might find a used one at a good price. There are plenty of mics out there that have been sitting in a drawer for a couple of decades. When you buy a used mic,...

Re: Thile using an SM57 mic

In Sinatra's day there were some really terrible hand held mics, even AKGs stunk. Boom,,crack...whenever the vocalist grabbed the mic. Not so with a 58 which is the same thing as a 57 but with a pop...

    A 58 is a 57 with a pop filter.

    Re: Eastwood Rickenbacker

Here's one on Craigslist. What are those tuners? Look like Fender style Klusons.

Re: Playability of a new Eastman 305 question

I've seen guitar nuts that used a fret rather than slotted material, I suppose there's probably somebody has done that with the mandolin. Why not just use a fret? Why is there a slotted nut at all? A...

Re: Flatwounds on an Eastman MD315

I have the TI 54s on an Eastman 404 and am very happy with it. With a nylon pick, talk about bell like tone. Not very loud though but fine for playing by myself.

Re: Looking at your hands while playing -- opinions?

Let your hands do it. Don't think about that fret on this string, think about the sound. By now there may be some place in your head that can go straight from thought to sound without the calculation...

    Re: EastWOOD electric mandolin

My first Eastman is a El Rey guitar. It is the obvious ancestor of the El Rey mandolin. It's a guitar with some contradictions. First and emphatically, it's wayyy neck heavy, so heavy it's hard to...

    Re: Thumb Pain

After reading this I played a bit and observed myself. My thumb is all over the place. It jumps around for different chord shapes and runs. It can do that because it doesn't support the neck much. I...

    Re: Pick orientation to strings

By angling the pick upwards do you mean pulling upwards on the string before letting it go rather than straight across or down?...makes a bit of pop.

    Re: Amplification

Haven't seen much about the actual amplification. To get good sound from an acoustic instrument you need a high quality, full range monitor.

    Re: Mandolin in the Hospital???

As a guitar player, much of my motive for getting a mandolin was to have an instrument I could play while flat on my back.

Re: Thumb wear on the neck

I'm using an unfinished, roasted maple neck on my strat type guitar which I play allot. It's by far my favorite neck surface. No stickyness. Clean it with a 3M pad.

    Re: Absolute Silence

I'd think you need the same strings and tension practicing as you would when you want to be heard. I grew up playing a solid body guitar, unamplified so the parents didn't hear it and that's about as...
