Re: Mandolin is guitar upside down?

The tunings are acronyms. That’s where the similarity ends. Guitar is tuned in fourths, mandolin is tuned in fifths. I would not approach mandolin learning as an upside-down guitar.

Re: DO I need a better mandolin?

If you haven’t played any others and have nothing to compare to, enjoy the ignorance. When you live five miles from Elderly Instruments like I do, the temptation is always there.

    An honest answer:...

    Re: Eastman MDO305 Octave Mandolin

Have you checked at The Mandolin Store?
  4. Re: What Are Some Good Options in the $2-3k range?

Northfield MA new is around $2500 new. They are excellent.

Collings MT used to be the go-to for the 2k market, but now they are $3500 new.

Re: Case for small Martin tenor guitar?

When I had a Blueridge BR40 tenor I used a case for a Martin OO. I don’t know how your guitar compares in size and shape, but you might check it out.

    Re: Guitar feels huge ...

I play mando, guitar and bass. I play mostly short scale basses so that makes the transition a little easier.

Re: Time to move up from my Eastman MD515

Last week I acquired a Northfield model M and it’s a great little mando. Highly recommend. I used to own an MT and I think the Northfield rivals the MT. NFI, but Last time I looked they had a blond...

Re: To be or not to be (a bluegrass player)

I’m in three bands but I can only think of a couple BG tunes that we play. So the answer is no. I do, however, play a lot of BG licks in the folk, rock and country tunes that we play.
  9. Re: Do you take your best or most valuable mandolin to gigs?

Yes, because I want to sound the best that I can.

    Re: Breedlove tailpiece replacement

I have a Breedlove America ff. I don’t find the TP to be any worse than most others. I long ago gave up threading the strings under the legs, I just let them go over. Then I put a small piece of tape...

    Re: Electric mandolin.

I’m gonna say that not enough people bought them?

I had an A8 for a while. It was okay, but I will say that the sound was not as good as an acoustic mandolin played into a mic. I ended up putting...
  12. Re: Ry Cooder isolated mandolin Love in Vain

I think that track was was also my first intro to mandolin. I’m not even sure if I knew it was a mandolin back then, but it’s one of my favorite Stones tunes, albeit a cover tune.

    As far as...

    Re: Secure Endpin?

In the past I have put a small piece of painters tape on the peg and pushed it back in. You can’t wrap the peg with it, it won’t fit after that. Just a small piece, and you may have to experiment...

    Re: Shure sm57

My problem with mics is that they are proximity sensitive. There is a sweet spot, and if you deviate from it, you’ll lose your volume. Turning the mic up only invites feedback. I move around way too...

Re: George Frayne (Commander Cody), RIP

We’ll, they got their start in the Midwest while at the University of Michigan. What a great band, sorry to hear that the Commander has been relived of duty.

    Re: Lakota mandolin straps

I have two round braid Lakota straps and I’ve never noticed any stretching. Couldn’t be happier with them.
  17. Re: 4 string or 8 string that's the question....

If you want it to sound like like a loud mandolin, get an 8 string. If you want to bend strings and use effects for rock and blues, get a 4 string.
  18. Re: Ry Cooder isolated mandolin Love in Vain

Man, that is one of my favorite Stones songs from that era. Speaking of tunings, is Ry playing his mandolin in standard tuning on that track? It sounds like it to me but I’m no expert on blues...

    Re: Need advice

Hooray! I just got it through a hole. I tried the opposite f-hole and it must have been just a tad larger. It was a struggle, but I eventually worked it through. Okay, on with the installation. I...

I played it for a year with the pick guard on. It stifled the sound and my picking technique.I just can’t abide pickguards.

    Re: Need advice

Near as I can tell, the hole is about 17 mm and the jack is about 18mm. So, not a big difference, but it’s not going through that hole without enlarging it. It came from the factory with a Shadow...

But then I would still have a hole in the side of the Mando. I’d like to kill two birds here.

    Need advice

I’m installing a twin piezo pickup in my Kentucky mandolin. It already has a hole drilled in the lower side for a 1/4” output jack. Only problem is, the jack won’t fit through the f-hole. So I guess...
