  1. Re: This just showed up in my inbox re: Gibson guitars

Very strange, Randi. I looked up the url for that email and it is parked… no web site. I don’t know who this firm or person is or whether they have any connection to Gibsoon. Also, when I search for...

    Re: Embergher Instruments best period

I am really not too sure how to answer your question. AFAIK this was a small shop but there were a few workers who worked with and for LE. I think in the very earlier days perhaps LE made all the...

Re: I Just Bought A Violin

I agree, Ranald. Some of the southern style players may have a flatter bridge but I am not sure it would be so flat to allow for bowing three strings at once. And yes it is the music that is played...

    Re: Herwiga Solist Mandolin

That is a german mandolin and they copied the Italian maker Luigi Embergher. Classical soloists (hence the model name) might need that high stratospheric note. That mandolin looks to be in rough...

    Re: Blue Comet/United/ Sorkin Mandolin

I had one of the other styles of these with the faux resonator that had the portholes. Heavily built and sold under a numner of names including Medalist, Blue Comet, Artistic and Beltone and probably...
  7. Re: Unusual Pocket/Travel Mandolin. Any Info on builder?

Poul Hansen, one of the MCers in Denmark has a few of these, though nothing quite as mother-of-toilet-seat-y as this one. It would look lovely on any wall. :)

    Re: Estate sale oddity

Mandriolas crop up frequently and in the US they are almost always OS's although I have seen other brands. You were wise to walk away especially at that price.

    Re: I need some advice!

I was waiting for someone to mention this. Thanks, Ray!

Sometimes you may only need a very thin shim. I have a roll of iron-on hardwood veneer and I have used a sliver of that as a shim. If...

Re: Information on "The Gorea" mandolin

Post a few photos. Often there were some mandolins made for wholesalers who put their names on them. The same mandolin could have five or six different brands depending on the importer.

    also let...

Re: El Noi de la Mare

Very nice playing, Michael. Do you offer sheet music of your arrangement?

It reminds a bit of Pettine’s Christmas Song, sweet and slow with caressed and caressing notes. Also of some of the less...
  12. Re: Is there something off with this Vintage Gibson F4?

The scroll alone is a dead giveaway. Nothing like the one in the ad above.

Re: New case day - Hoffee

Is the Hoffee made of carbon fiber and is it lighter than the Caltons?

Most of my mandolins are in TKL or similar. Not real need that I can see for a more protective case than those.

Re: aging fingers just can't cut it anymore

Or check the set up on your mandolin and possibly use lighter strings with lower action.

    Re: Mandocello

Actually that video is not of a mandocello but more the same range as an octave mandolin: "Arrangement for 10-string cittern of a 16th century Italian dance tune. Cittern made by Paul Hathaway, tuned...

    Re: Mandocello

I tried one of the Eastman mandocellos and was not impressed. It is basically one of there archtop guitars converted with eight strings. I played a couple of them and for some reason they came not...

I am a few years older than you. I have noticed that I am slowing down and probably can't quite play as accurately as I used to especially at break neck speeds. OTOH I think you might just give...

    Re: The Australian Mandolin Quartet

I am fascinated by the Australian timbers. Can you speak of the choices you add tonally for choosing the woods you chose? How do they relate to the North American woods many of us are familiar with?...

I am away from my computer but my guess would be Stridente. IIRC they usually have round labels. I love those darkish brown buttons on the tuners. My de-accessed DeMeglio had those.
