I’d like to share an experience that might inform someone else on their quest towards whatever musical goals they pursue.
I’ve played mandolin for a long time, have owned—and sold—numerous fine...
Well, there was that one time ... :whistling:
A few years ago, my band had just finished playing an interesting show. We were sort of the background music for a cabaret setting, with ladies and...
I was playing my Collings MT and just loved the sound of it. Not my playing, but the sound of this mandolin. I am using D'Addario EXPs that I still have and every note sounds so nice. The flat keys...
Absolutely!
I really start off with good lighting. It can be something as simple as a strong reflector shop light (I am using a Godox SL-150 as my key light meaning it is my main light source)....
Just got done listening to Caterina Lichtenberg and Mike Marshall's CD of Bach inventions and felt inspired to play one. You can even watch it in 4k!
Enjoy and keep on picking!
Hey Folks!
Here's Maiden’s Prayer, with John David Williams on button accordion.
This is a favourite jam tune of mine, especially since slow numbers that aren't waltzes are a bit of a bluegrass...
I rarely get excited about an album of banjo instrumentals, but I make an exception for this one. This is music that deserves our collective attention. And remember, this comment is from a guy (me)...
Not posted any Session King photos of late - here is one due out the shop today - mahogany back and sides, torrefied sitka top, 22" scale, tuned GDAE.

I just found an older thread with a link for this meeting of John Reischman's group with some Chinese musicians playing "Katy Hill". John duets with liuqin player, then pipa, etc.

No apologies necessary. I specialize in my own form of hijacking but I call it taking a pleasant detour on another connected road or something like that.
A friend of mine who plays a wide variety...
I love traditional Chinese music and used to search for instruments (long before ebay). But I didn't live in the bay area and so I couldn't find any other than a yangqin. At the time I also played...
The LiuQin is the closest Chinese instrument to the mandolin. I think one of the tunings they use is GDAE. I wonder if anyone has bought one either from an importer in the US or directly from China...
1975 my big brother Steve put 15 year old me in his 68 VW bug and we drove from NJ down to Williamsburg Bluegrass Festival. What a trip. What an experience. Big buzz was the young mandolin kid who...

Here is my latest Piccolo (Sopranino) Mandolin build, completed just a few days ago. I am still tweaking the setup, but am pleased with it already. I love its sweet, clear voice...

Not mandolin, but I thought the content might be interesting for everyone. I subscribe to Mary for 2 reasons, she does a lot of guitar related coverage , her videos are well made and interesting, and...
Looks good to me.
I should think you'll have seen this, played on something pretty similar.

A customer/friend had her mandolin stolen from her house a couple of years ago, an Old Wave she'd worn the finish off the back of the neck playing for 20 years. Made her another that she liked as...
hello mandolin lovers....
so here is a fun tale of 2 mandolins, a happy coincidence and a new pal.
Most of the regulars here will know of Don Grieser, his frequent supportive comments on the...
