Re: SIMPLE Editing Software for PC

Sherry, I use a free program called HD Video Converter, by WonderFox Software. It has some annoyances with frequent paid upgrade offers, but it does the job admirably of clipping/trimming, cropping,...

Re: SIMPLE Editing Software for PC

If by "crop" you're meaning to delete the first and last portions of the video, portions that you don't wish to share with viewers -- sort of just a "trim" clean-up -- then yes...

Re: SIMPLE Editing Software for PC

Sherry -- In Windows, use the "Video Editor" program that comes free with the operating system; it's by far the simplest. You can trim the video with that. You can also add text, titles, etc....

Re: SIMPLE Editing Software for PC

I agree that this is an incredibly useful (and free) app. It is poorly named. I use it to create MP4 files (an audio and video file) which load directly and easily to YouTube. It also has the...

Re: SIMPLE Editing Software for PC

I think it is still possible to find MovieMaker. It used to be included with Windows, but is not any more. MovieMaker can do simple trims and a few other simple editting tasks. I used it for a year...

Re: Learning mandolin and music theory?

For any young people wanting to play the music they usually listen to, it’s going to be a little more problematic because of copyright.
Difficult to find notation to a lot of songs and finding TAB...

Re: How Much Difference Do Speakers Make?

TWO THUMBS UP for the Edifiers. I have one set hooked up to the flatscreen in my bedroom, and another I use for the music in my spare room. Decent sound and enough volume for you to actually hear it.

Re: How Much Difference Do Speakers Make?

Computer speakers are generally going to be inadequate in bass response and imaging. Bonafide studio monitors are going to be way more $$ than you want or need. Near field powered speakers would be a...

    Re: Triplets Pick Direction

Sherry, I would use UDU but that may be my personal preference for keeping my right hand in the DUDU pattern. It also puts the quarter notes after the triplets naturally on a down stroke, which for...

    Re: Strumming like guitar?

Here is a great example of mandolin strumming by a modern master.

Not Bluegrass by any means but definitely mandolin centric.

    Re: Chord Questions

    Sherry

With all due respect, I think that whoever posted the chords to "Because He Lives" simply forgot to put a space between two chords: Gm C7 is the ii-V7 chord progression in the key of F....
  15. Re: What is the difference between a trill and a hammer-on?

Here is an interesting explanation of using hammer-ons and pull-offs for trills on classical guitar. She makes the point that there are sometimes trills that have to be sustained so the hammer-on /...
  16. Re: What is the difference between a trill and a hammer-on?

Yes, but repeating the hammer-on pull-off many times. Think Eddie Van Halen!

Nor should it. ;) That doesn't make any sense. Looks like it was their typo, not yours. Sorry!

Thanks for posting that. Your previous post was most puzzling. I...
  18. Re: What is the difference between a trill and a hammer-on?

Short answer is yes, a "hammer-on" is , IMO/IME, simply a discrete pitch change *up* (vs. a slide) by a rapid finger press that's held until the next note.

A trill strongly suggests at least a 3...
  19. Re: What is the difference between a trill and a hammer-on?

The trill isn’t just the one move, it’s quickly repeating. I’ll find you an example. Common in classic music and funk.

So, there are other ways to trill, but it is...

    Re: Chord Questions

Yeah, if you are playing with others, have the guitarists play the bass note, or a bass player, and you play the normal D or G chord.

  23. Re: How to Keep a Headstock Tuner from Damaging Your Instrument

  24. Re: Scale Exercises Using Triplets, For Example

Check out posts #16 and #17 by Zoukboy in this thread. These exercises have been really helpful for me in the past. I really need to "diggity dig dig" and "dig dig diggity" back into them.
  25. Re: Scale Exercises Using Triplets, For Example

As I said, use what works for you.

But you also asked about ‘best use of time’, and you said you’re doing it by memory but making mistakes on the downward passes. You have to judge if the time...
