    Re: dovetail neck joint

I saw photo of a similar joint just recently. Can't remember the builder, but he said the gap at the end of the dovetail was functional. He said it should be located directly below the 14th fret. The...

    Re: Name that mando!

I was there. Tim started off playing an F style mandolin. The Nugget was nowhere in sight. Then the mando made a nasty noise, broken string I assume, and he switched to a different F style. He made a...

Re: The Joe K. Walsh Interview

Great interview! Joe is one of my favorite mandolin players. Seen him tearing it up with the Gibson Brothers and also at a local house concert. I recommend his cd Sweet Loam and also the Peghead...

    Re: Another high $$$ pick

I have one of these new Gravity picks. To my ears it's bright and clicky on the strings. Don't like it for mandolin. Seems ok for guitar. For mandolin I'll stick with my Wegen mando pick.It has a...

    Re: New Review

That's a beauty! Congrats. I have Girouard #61 and it's all I think I'll ever need. I had Max put a finger rest on mine. Never had one before but I like that too. It's not as red as this photo:

Looks like you are doing excellent work on this one. Nice!! Looking forward to seeing more progress.
  8. Re: Pancake kit with poor neck joint - Opinions & advice apprecia

Yeah, that's not the case. No over the top emailing at all. But thanks for assuming what transpired much like the maker assumed what my abilities were.
  9. Re: Pancake kit with poor neck joint - Opinions & advice apprecia

Hm. I thought I was pretty clear about what went on here. For those of you who get it, thank you! For those who don't, here's even more info:

This kit sells for over $300 (approximately the same...

    Re: Ebmw f5 016

Looks great! Can't tell for sure from the photos but is this a satin finish? My custom a-style Girouard has a satin finish and coloring very similar to your mandolin. The satin just feels great.

    I...

Re: Some of my latest builds...

First thing I said when the image popped up was, Cool! Would love to hear what one of these sounds like and details about their design and construction.
  12. Re: Pancake kit with poor neck joint - Opinions & advice apprecia

The steel slug is part of the truss rod. The whole issue with this neck joint is that it is not well fitted. The neck and body are clearly not meant to be fastened together in their current state....
  13. Re: Pancake kit with poor neck joint - Opinions & advice apprecia

Actually that is another problem I have with the kit. The neck joint design must have changed at some point and the included directions were not updated accordingly. The photos in the directions show...
  14. Re: Pancake kit with poor neck joint - Opinions & advice apprecia

Sorry for any confusion. The picture posted showing the extremely well fitted neck joint was to show an example of exactly that....a nice joint. It is not from the campfire kit but rather just pulled...
  15. Re: Pancake kit with poor neck joint - Opinions & advice apprecia

Thanks for the responses. At least I know it's not me being too picky. I built a nice Kawalek kit a few years ago. The neck block and tenon for that kit fit nice and tight out of the box.

    I did...
  16. Pancake kit with poor neck joint - Opinions & advice appreciated

My wife bought a pancake mandolin kit (from a Cafe member who never got around to building it) as a 50th birthday gift for me. It was originally purchased from a respected builder. I discovered...

Re: Kudo's to MAx and Lauri @ Girouard

#61 checking in. Had it 5 months now and the sound and playability are terrific. Makes me smile just opening the case. I haven't even bothered to change the original strings yet because they still...

Re: Question on Grover 309 tuning machines

I like mine. Very solid and smooth operation. The shafts seem long when they are mounted close to the edge of the headstock.

Re: Just got a Tone Gard

I had one but sold it. It did improve the tone but I don't really need that for just playing around my house like I do. I also found that my mando bounced around on my belly when I stood up. My belly...
