Re: Is It Possible to Fake It?

I agree with onassis "fake" isn't really a good description, if you were trying to play some other players solo note for note and not quite getting it, that might be faking, other wise, improvisation...

    Re: Wide neck Mandolins ?

you could string a mandola like a mando but the scale is usually 3-4 inches longer, I do prefer the wider neck I know this from mandola and octave playing.
I let a nice Weber Yellowstone wide nut...

Re: post a video of yourself

This is the second theme from Mike Oldfield's 1974 album Hergest Ridge. I'm playing the guitar parts on mandocello and octave mandolin and the oboe on mandola.

  15. Re: Eastwood 8-string vs. 4-string Nut Widths

I haven't found this with octaves so much but with mandocellos if the neck width is standard guitar, some of the chord shapes and or scale/ arpeggios are difficult to reach, it has more to do with...
  16. Re: Eastwood 8-string vs. 4-string Nut Widths

I have the 8 string MRG model, sold as an octave mando tuned GDAE 23.5 inch scale and 1,3/8 inch wide nut.

its a little longer scale than I am used to on octave but the neck is considerably...
  17. Re: My composition for the mandola and other instruments

again that flute really stand out for me on these recordings, this album has a diverse flavor in presentation but there is a common musicality to the entire set of tunes, great stuff all around

Re: Three string chords - good and bad?

on the root - I really mean for basic harmony demonstration, but if you play just an EG instead of a C chord that could be an Em or an A7, and often omitting the root in a chord with an ensemble that...

Re: Three string chords - good and bad?

The root is the Tonic or the most important tone of the chord. So for a C chord, C is the root, we expect a C to be played .
We can add an E and G even a Bb for the 7th or B for the Major 7th and...
  23. Re: Learning octave mandolin before regular mandolin

Marcus CA I did have a Pertersen Cittern - 10 string though I think it was a short scale - like 22 inch or something, so more like a 10 string octave I guess- t had a roundish A shape and an oval...
  24. Re: Learning octave mandolin before regular mandolin

I'm thinking its easier to go from mandolin to octave than from octave to mandolin, but that's just me.

I went from guitar to mandolin to octave to mandocello and mandola pretty much in that order.

Re: Three string chords - good and bad?

I use 3 string chords probably more than I should.
IMHO they can be very effective and sometimes the tonal order on the mandolin or dola just doesn't stack to my liking, so better to omit one tone...
