    Re: Best Beginner Mandolin Book

I won't recommend a specific book. When I was first starting out as a player, and when I picked up the mandolin again after laying off a few years, I was always irked to discover that quite often, a...

Re: Request for a few standards for jams

    Midnight on the Water.

There are several versions of this tune, played on the mandolin, on Youtube. Here are a couple:

    Simple Gifts

    Ash Grove

Although it's a contra dance tune, The March of St. Timothy might work, if it's played at a slower tempo:

I've always thought this was a nice collection of simply arranged well- and lesser- known tunes.
Page 26 is a personal favorite.

    Re: Jack Tottle's book

Staples or even a local copy/print shop may be able to spiral bind it for you. I've had it done for some of my other music books for about $8.

    Re: A basic classical piece

It took me about 3 weeks to get used to reaching for the high B in the second part. But, yeah, I always thought it wasn't too difficult.

Re: Tell me about Wernick Method Jam Camp

A friend attended a jam camp a few years ago, and he told me the attitude was "play what you can, don't worry about what you can't."
At least, try not to worry too much. :)

Re: Jam Etiquette re: Playing Mandolin Chords

As long as you're making a useful contribution to the overall sound, chopping two-finger chords shouldn't be a problem. You may have to learn new patterns for some chords, but they're not too hard.

    Re: KM-120 questions

Nothing so fancy as a micrometer but I've got an old pair of calipers that put the low G at .0394". The high e is too thin to register.

    Re: KM-120 questions

A few minutes with a micrometer should provide a clue as to an appropriate string gauge.

Otherwise, if you're not happy with the sound and playability, for any reason, you should return it.

You don't say whether you're in coach or a private room. Yes, you can play in your compartment, or in the lounge, as long as you observe Quiet time restrictions.
