Re: Gibson string anchoring at tailpiece

    Gibson string anchoring at tailpiece

I reckon this has come up before, but didn't know how to go looking....
I recall reading somewhere, years ago, that Gibson had a patent to allow the A and E strings to be anchored as shown in the...

Re: Nice case. but not for a mandolin

Jamie, the old A4 is a standard size A style mandolin and will fit in all the A style mandolin cases. The A4 came to me in a case intended for a larger instrument. I want to sell this case to a...

Re: Nice case. but not for a mandolin

Yes both A and F style mandolins fit but are not properly nested, and need fillers of some kind to keep them from moving around in the case. My plan is to sell this case to someone whose instrument...

Re: Nice case. but not for a mandolin

Thanks, Nick. It appears that your mandola would not quite fit in this case. I just re-measured it and the overall length of anything longer than 28.25" would totally bottom out the cushioning.

Re: Nice case. but not for a mandolin

Here are a couple of photos with the A4 in place. There is a gap of 2.25" between the top of the headstock and the inner surface of the case. According to what I have read, this is about the...

Re: Nice case. but not for a mandolin

No way. A tenor guitar is just a regular guitar with 4 strings, same scale length. We are looking for an instrument with a short neck.

I am hoping a mandola player will post length and width dimensions of that instrumet.

Nice case. but not for a mandolin

I recently received an old Gibson A4 (story in Vintage section) that came in a good quality case intended for an instrument larger than a mandolin. The internal dimensions are 28" long and 11" wide....

Re: New to me Gibson A4

Hi all, I'm back with an update. The A4 as I had received it had rather high action, a non-original bridge and needed a proper setup. I purchased an adjustable bridge of matching color and had a...

Re: New to me Gibson A4

Thanks to everyone for your research and fine detective work. It seems this A4 has had its share of repairs and modifications. Perhaps understandable for an instrument more than 100 years old. The...

Re: New to me Gibson A4

Thanks for the tip. I just checked the brace and pushed up at each end and everything is snug and solid. No movement at all. Good to know that this is OK. ......Rick

Re: New to me Gibson A4

Thanks to all for your responses. Attached are some more photos. There is very little fret wear, so this instrument may not have been played much.

    New to me Gibson A4

I have just inherited a Gibson A4 mandolin which was previously owned by my wife's cousin who has sadly passed away.

It appears to be in good shape. The serial number on the label is 4921. ...

    Re: Question about pinky use...

Right! It is a matter of determined practice. The 6th to 7th fret by plunking the pinky down on the 7th was once difficult for me, but is now very easy. Having said that, it is more difficult to...

    Colleen Malone (Crosspicking arrangement)

This is an instrumental arrangement of what was a very popular song for Tim O'Brien back in the day. He used an appealing, but unusual crosspicking style that I was never able to copy. It was in...
  17. Re: There has got to be something better than Tabledit, right?

Whether there is something better is a matter of opinion. There is a learning curve with all of them. What I really like in TablEdit is the audio playback, so you can hear exactly how it is...

I agree! A great solo indeed. I would love for someone to post a transcription of this break. A TablEdit file would be even better. I know there are lots of people on this forum that can do this....
  19. Re: Tip for using fingers on the high E string from 7th to 0

I must be missing the point here. Do all the notes have to be played on the E string? It seems to me that the best and easiest way to play the sequence of notes would be to play in the second...

    Re: Advice on a Mandola?

Sorry to drift off the topic a bit, but maybe a good time to clear up just what is the difference between a mandola and an ocatave mandolin.

Am I correct with the following?

    A Mandola is tuned...

    Another source for Backup Tracks

Just thought I would share this as most of us are hunkered down at home and plunking away on our mandolins on our own. Nobody to jam with. So backup tracks are a good substitute. But what do you...

Re: Listing of 3-string chord shapes

    Thanks, Bill,
Yes, that's a great layout of chord shapes. This will be a great reference for chord-melody arrangements.
