    Re: Newly completed Mandolino Milanese

Thank you Sebastiaan. Yes, it seems to be bowlback season! The strings are Sevarez, and were sized for me by Boston Catlines. I didnt like the carbon G string, so I used an Aquila wound G. The rose...

    Newly completed Mandolino Milanese

Part of the enjoyment of building mandolins is the research that goes into a recreating an historic instrument. I certainly learned a lot about the historic development of the mandolin while building...

Re: 6 course Mandolino under construction

    I don't much experience here...only what I have read.
The "G tuning would be considered standard. The long running complaint is string breakage on the high G. So the high G was sometimes dropped an...

    Jim,
What do you think about a "D" tuning?
I have started the finish and hope to have strings on it by the end of the week:

Re: 6 course Mandolino under construction

    Hi Joe,
This style goes by many names, however, "Mandolino" is the original name...preceding Milano and Lombardo.
I ordered a custom set of strings from Boston Catlines. As you know, getting a...

    6 course Mandolino under construction

I am working on a 6 course mandolino in curly walnut and Sitka spruce.
Tuning will be in 4th's rather than 5th's.
There is a specific instrument called a "mandolino".
    Here is a brief description:...

  10. Re: Newly Completed Brescian Mandolin in Walnut and Maple

Thank you for the kind words, Mick. The action is set at .03 at the first fret, and .09 at the 12th fret. I think this is pretty standard for nylon stringed instruments like the ukulele. The...
  11. Re: Newly Completed Brescian Mandolin in Walnut and Maple

Thank you. John. I think the traditional mustache bridge is a bit too much "19th century", so I tried for something more contemporary. The arm rest is a nice nod to the designs of the modern German...

    Re: Brescian review

    Hi Jim,
Maybe I can shed some light on your question.
Aquila makes string for a variety of vintage instruments. According to their research, A-390 was probably the pitch most common around...

Re: Post a picture of what's on your bench?

That makes sense. You have 8 strings pulling nearly as much as steel strings. I have only 4 strings, so the tension is much less.

Re: Post a picture of what's on your bench?

Very clean work, Sebastiaan. Really looks nice.
Do you have photo of the bracing pattern you used?
I went pretty light on the one I built because of the nylon strings.
