    Brakemans' Blues (Punch Brothers cover)

I'm interested in learning the Punch Bros cover of Brakeman's Blues, but I have no idea where to begin. I found an earlier post on these forums about it, but I don't even know what to make of it.

    Re: set up defiined

A good setup should also include checking and (most likely) adjusting the string height and the bridge placement for better playability and intonation, respectively. I'd imagine there's more to it...

Re: Punch Brothers: Who's Feeling Young Now

Just got back home from the Wilmington show. It was a pretty great atmosphere, and I even got to meet Pickles and Thile after the show. They played almost their entire new album, with the exception...

    Re: Tough Audiences

My cat hates to hear the mandolin. It's gotten to the point that if I want him to leave the room, I just unzip my case.

However, it probably didn't help that I chased him around the apartment...

Re: Punch Brothers: Who's Feeling Young Now

I've seen Chris Thile by himself in Durham, and that was pretty good. I'm going to see the entire band this weekend in Wilmington and I'll post here when I get back.

Re: Punch Brothers: Who's Feeling Young Now

I'm driving over to Wilmington this weekend to see them, and I'm excited to hear them live. If nothing else, Chris Thile/Punch Brothers show banter is always enjoyable!

Re: Sad, but possibly true. ;-)

With regards to slicing potatoes, I've had some success using the E courses. Great for different cheeses, as well.

I've had no luck creating any tunes, though, mostly just frustrated notes and...

Re: Punch Brothers: Who's Feeling Young Now

I think this sentiment captures the new album fairly accurately. While I don't doubt for a second that recording their previous albums was a ton of fun, it seems like Punch/Antifogmatic were albums...

Re: Punch Brothers: Who's Feeling Young Now

I've only been able to listen to it twice so far, but I thoroughly enjoy it.

It's certainly not a bluegrass album, but I'm pretty sure the guys didn't set out to make Who's Feeling Young Now? a...

    Re: Your favorite fiddle tune

Far and away, Billy in the Lowground is my favorite* fiddle tune. I really like Whiskey Before Breakfast, and I'm working on adding that to my meager collection of playable songs.

    *Interestingly...

Who's gonna man (or woman) up and buy it?

    Re: Beginner Questions...

I can't really help you with your first two requests, as I'm just a beginner myself, but coming to the Mandolin Cafe is definitely a great first step towards learning how to play (or, trying to play)...

Re: 1st Time Playing for an Audience - Advice?

A lot of great advice here, so I'll reiterate what some have said and only add a few pieces.

    1. Most people won't notice if you hit the wrong notes here or there. Don't let an insignificant detail...

Re: Is there a free "slow down" download?

I just tried this out myself, and all you have to do is play a song in Windows Media Player, and then right click on the 'play' button and choose 'slow playback.' Alternatively, you could just press...

    Re: Proper fingering?

Thanks for the quick responses, guys! I'll still work on my finger strength, of course, but 6-2-0-0 is much easier to hit than what I was attempting previously.

Ah, sorry about that. I'm not really sure how to classify it because I'm still just getting into the theory of music. The book (Beginning Mandolin, by Greg Horne) suggests playing this open A chord...

    Proper fingering?

My first post here, so please forgive me if this is something that has been covered before.
