I believe his excellent design of the body is the major contributor to that fantastic sound.
You don't happen to have one of his standard mandos too, do you? I am curious about the depth of the...
Those photos are very helpful. I came up with 10.5" scale length on the piccolo (assuming the standard is 14").
Maybe it's not as straight forward as I thought. Do you suggest 13" for playability or some other reason?
Looking at Fiffoff's photo of his mando/piccolo side by side earlier in this thread gives...
Thanks. I've seen other recommendations for McDonald's book as well and will definitely get it for reference if nothing else.
Reducing his fullscale plans to piccolo size appeals to me but I'm...
Bump this old thread as I would like to build a flat top A/N piccolo.

One change I made subsequent to the original posting of photos was to add a second dowel to the upper shape-maker....

Here's a sound clip I recorded on my phone so not the best quality. The first part is on my Eastman 315 and the second is on the travel mando. I don't think my Eastman sounds as tinny as it does in...
Hm. That may be beyond my technical ability but I will try.

I wanted an instrument for my personal entertainment and practice in a hotel room so quietness was an objective, second only to inexpensive. Other objectives were small enough to fit in a regular...
Terrific, Tom! Thank you. Lots for me to work with.
I like this take on "16 Tons". The chord progression sounds like 1m 4m 5 but I cannot tell what chords MandolinPaul is playing. Can anyone help?

Thanks Willie, you got me looking in the right places.
The bridge is centered but the outer G string is much closer to the edge than the outer E. I cut some new notches in the bridge for the G's...
Something else I just noticed while practicing: At frets 1-8 or so the outer G string is right above the bevel at the end of the fret. ANY side movement of the string pushes it down the bevel...
Mando noob here.
My problem is fingering the A chord (and similar uses for the index finger). After several months of trying, I can't do it effectively with one OR two fingers. Using one finger...
This is a great gift! I requested a copy yesterday, received it today, scanned through it and already found a couple of problems I need to address with my setup. Tomorrow I'm going to Harbor...
