After posting the above list just the other day, I realized that I've never been completely happy with my last choice: Kentucky KM-270 Mandolin / Gravity Sunrise Big Mini 1.5. So, I dug out my very...

Re: Octave Mandolin string choices (MDO305)

FWIW, after a fair amount of experimentation, I've settled on EJ-72's for both my Eastman MDA-315 Mandola and my Eastman MDO-305 Octave Mandolin.

    "That Banjo Thingy!" (OM Content)

I accompanied a singer in a live performance recently, mostly on guitar, but I played OM on one song. Later, I heard someone in the audience refer to the OM as, "...that Banjo thingy!";)

Re: is the mandola the perfect instrument?

Well I have a mandolin, a mandola, an octave mandolin, and I want a mandocello.
But, yes, I guess if I could only keep one it would be the mandola.
Luckily, I don't have to make that choice!

Re: Pickgaurds on my Eastman Octave and Mandola

No, but I've thought about it. The OM and the Dola have the same not-very-good-but-they-work tuners, but the ones on the OM are fairly smooth and the same ones on the Mandola are pretty stiff. The...

Re: Even heavier strings on an Eastman MDO305?

Glad you enjoyed my quest! I guess all my Mandolin family instruments are now strung with 'mediums'.
    - I'm staying with the D'Addario EJ-72's on my MDO305 OM (21" scale).
    - But after a pro setup...

  19. Re: Archtop mando bridge is as low as it can go - options?

I took it to the best luthier I know, Glenn Nelson at Mockingbird Music in Berlin, MA. He's going to take material off the bottom of the bridge base since it's quite beefy (see picture in OP) as well...

Re: Eastman MD404 or Kentucky KM-272?

Thanks Keith. I agree, but the instrument is otherwise excellent and the relief is near flat (no, I don't have any gauges), so I'm going to have my luthier fix (or even replace) the bridge. He can...
  21. Re: Archtop mando bridge is as low as it can go - options?

Re: Eastman MD404 or Kentucky KM-272?

It arrived this morning in good shape, and I've been playing it all day. I've played guitar for over 60 years, but I've played very few mandolins. So my review will be more of an executive summary...
