Lots of excellent advice here and I really like this from Simon. If I'm understanding this correctly he's saying to know the melody so well that, if you need to, you can omit notes while still making...

I agree that slowing things down and then gradually increasing tempo is probably your best bet. Btw, Simon DS, I had never heard of this site and it's pretty awesome! Thanks for sharing! :mandosmiley:
I agree with Bill! I've also taken a couple of Aaron's Peghead Nation courses and I thought they were extremely well put together! :mandosmiley:
Hey guys,
I've been trying to learn more rock songs that involve mandolin and I stumbled across this YouTube channel:
https://www.youtube.com/@RockPopMandolin
I thought it was pretty cool so...
I'm not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for as it won't listen to what you play, but I am a huge fan of The Sight Reading Factory. It's something like $30 for the year and it lets you fully...
Nice job everyone!
I recently picked up the book by Marilynn Mair and Paulo Sa "Brazilian Choro: A Method for Mandolin and Bandolim". Lots of great stuff in there. Not only tunes and exercises but...
Abraham Lincoln?...I thought Bob Dylan said that? :mandosmiley:
Oh! I understand now! So the solo the author is transcribing is being played by Django really high on the neck (well, really high for a mandolin). For instance, the first Ab which I would normally...
Hi everyone!
I recently purchased a book of Django Reinhardt solos and the way in which the author has notated the transcriptions really has me confused. Here's a snippet of notation to illustrate...
Hey everyone,
I posted about www.sightreadingfactory.com quite a while back and I see they are running a Black Friday sale for 20% off (bring the total to $28 for a year) so I figured I'd throw out...
Wow! Thanks everyone! This is awesome! Obviously I really appreciate the tunes to practice but the advice on the different types of tremolo and ways to incorporate those into my playing are also much...
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knew of any books or resources containing tunes that lend themselves to tremolo?
Generally, I practice tremolo just using scales and playing them with...
Cool! Yeah I'm definitely looking forward to more of the John Reischman course. Regarding the Aaron Weinstein course, if you're into chord melody at all, this is just great stuff. For instance, one...
That's so funny. I just signed up for the John Reischman melodic mandolin course as well and it was in large part to the Birdland Breakdown portion. Great tune!
Speaking of the Peghead courses, I...
Hi John, I think your approach is spot on. I'm not sure how intricate you want your lines to be but if you play the root on the "1" and the fifth on the "3" (aka playing in two) you will be outlining...
Hi Daniel,
This is such a cool tune! I agree with the others in that I think 1st position should work for the melody. Regarding fingerings, are there specific passages you are having particular...
Lots of really great points being made here! I would also suggest that as "default pick technique", I've been taught (and have found a lot of value in) keeping your downstrokes on the beats. In other...
Hi everyone,
I'm looking to learn classical mandolin technique and was wondering if anyone had opinions on whether a private teacher was necessary or a pre-recorded video course (such as the...
I'm currently pursuing a degree in computer science and we have "guitar club" at my school (FYI, I'm the only member of "guitar club" who doesn't play guitar haha!) Anyway, the club is run by a...
Hey, I'm a big fan of Functional Ear Trainer. I've found it to be really helpful and it's free! :mandosmiley:
Hey guys, not sure if it's of any interest but I found a seemingly cool site where you can plug in a chord and it gives you a list of scales that you can use to solo over it. It's made with guitar in...
Hey everyone, just kind of a random thing that just popped into my head as I was working on some new stuff...I think the number of resources available to musicians (regardless of instrument) is...
Hey Tighthead, yeah I should've mentioned that. You have to use violin as it doesn't have have one specifically for mandolin. That actually reminds me of another cool thing about it. You can adjust...
Hey everyone,
I was just curious if anyone has been getting into any Klezmer as of late? I got a book called Easy Klezmer Tunes by Stacy Phillips and have been really enjoying it. From what I...
Hey everyone,
No financial interest here but I just wanted to plug The Sight Reading Factory for anyone looking to (you guessed it) learn or get better at sight reading. I didn't see any posts...
