Re: Do I need a mandola?

One way to get around the chord transposition issues with mandolas is to learn all major and minor chords as five string chords (cittern).
Then you just shift any mandolin full, five course chords...

Re: Do I need a mandola?

    Take any old guitar:
Put the G string where the B string was. Tune it to A (or buy a slightly lighter G string).
Put the D string where the G string was, no change in tuning
    Put the A string...

Re: Going from mandolin to mandola, tunes

You can move up the neck a bit on the mandola to get out of the confusion zone near the nut.
Then you pick two roots an octave apart. Either four string to third or fourth to second.

    So you’re...

Re: Should I Resist Waverly Tuners?

Interesting, Ive always thought that mandolins, for the most part are beautiful instruments. Someone even complimented me on my Rogue-clone the other day.

  8. Re: question on Getting Into Jazz Mandolin exercises

Interval training really helps when trying to play by ear.
You hear a melody jump and your fingers will automatically jump the same amount.

Even a little practice will help a lot.

More foot-tappers. Hope you guys all enjoy this Northumberland tune as much as I did playing it.
Lot of traffic in the background but the recorder, a Zoom H6 seems to have reduced it quite a bit.

Re: Tune a ukulele like a mandolin

A LOT depends, as has been said on the string tension which of course is scale length dependent -not all concert ukes have the same scale length. :)

Might be good to go to a gypsy violin site, check their notation, convert it to TAB and (important) try to figure out a Django style picking pattern.

  21. Re: Irish or Italian? Does pick direction matter?

    Thanks, with the first measure:
    |vf/2uf/2 vfugv^g|a
I’d try to keep the first two notes separate from the following three notes.
That is, I’d slide from the second f to the g in order to keep that...
  22. Irish or Italian? Does pick direction matter?

Here’s an Italian tune played a bit differently in different parts of Italy.
I’ve included notation and TAB to show various pick direction options.
