  1. Re: Where do the names F-style and A-style actually come from?

Always assumed F mandolins were named after a resemblance in part to the cursive "F"

It's what I always see when I look at one, but I'll admit I'm wrong having been further edumicated! :)

    Re: Vintage Gibson A4

Some modern bridges have adjustable posts. A couple of mine are adjusted with a small allen key.

    Re: Vintage?

Sheesh, I'm 50. And kids say to me - "Led Zeppelin, The Doors! They're from your era old man."

    I'm like, "no, they're from my Dad's era. I wasn't born...."

All the purchase price is in the top I assume?

Surprised they used the headstock veneer for the conversion - double flowerpot and all....

    Re: Vintage?

Aside from Doc's Gallagher (my memory is that was an endorsement deal like Earl and Vega banjos), seems they all recognised that buying brand new was not the best option. Like the guys in the 70s who...

    Re: Vintage Gibson A4

My F4 has old original tuners. I had an A mandolin also.

First thing - old tuners don't feel like modern ones. You turn in one direction a quarter and nothing happens, then it does!

    Second...

Re: Levon Helm’s Gibson F-4 what year is it ?

True, but the original tuners would have been worm under cog - the headstock is drilled for such.

    198626

By the end of 24 they were using worm over cog tuners like this, and the post holes were...

Re: Levon Helm’s Gibson F-4 what year is it ?

Also, this has cog under worm tuners. They changed to cog over worm in 24 sometime, so 24 at the latest.

    Re: Vintage?

I see the word "vintage," when referring to instruments, as being pre significant and permanent changes.

I consider vintage Martins to be anything before they switched from Brazilian rosewood to...

    Re: Old F-Case Repair. Handle?

Just from an old briefcase. Not a perfect match texturally, but the colour is an okay match. Kind of funky in a cool way.

Just practice gluing fabric to wood before hand! You'll get the hang of it. Hide glue would scare me! :)

    Re: Old F-Case Repair. Handle?

Once I'd glued and clamped the (almost detached) bottom back to the sides, I masked off rodent holes and used a two-part epoxy wood filler. Used some old (not identical) tolex to patch over it.

    Re: Old F-Case Repair. Handle?

I used PVA - white glue. Really thinly smeared so as not to soak through the material. Did the face sections first - velvet direct to the wood. For the edges I attached the velvet to cardboard first,...

Finally got to working on this case (see top post for the before shots).

    Re: D’addario XT differences

Interesting - I always assumed the plain strings in such sets were "treated" at best, not actually coated.

Not a criticism - but the OP has been a member since Jan 2020 and has a post count of 10.

In terms of not replying yet, might be just that they don't stop by very often.

No experience with the XTs, but have the XSs on a couple of mandos. Definitely don't sound flat, muffled or soft!

Re: Long Scale Gibson Banjo question...

Can't help feeling the Gibson long-neck banjo is just the tip of a mighty valuable iceberg! Virtually any Martin guitar or Gibson mandolin pre 1980 is worth more than a Gibson long-neck banjo.

I looked at the label - that's not a 1921 label like I ever saw!

One thing I've learned about an F4 - it wants to be an only child. Sounds the best when there are no other nearby mandolins to endlessly compare it against ;)

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

As far as I've seen, a Loar-era F4 (compared to an earlier F4) is just an F4 with a truss rod. Am I wrong?
