  2. Re: multi-instrumentalists: how do you manage your time?

Me, too! I want to be playing the instrument that I want to be playing. I don't want to be playing one instrument while wishing to be playing a different one. BTW, I'm up to mandolin, octave...

Re: What is a C2 chord?

Such a long thread emerging from such a short question! Shows the question isnít as simple as it looked.

Everyone is agreeing that a D note is involved, and on mandolin, the easiest places to...

Iíve always been under the impression that they sell their instruments directly to customers, rather than through stores.

Re: Where are all the (new) mandolins?

Here in the SF Bay Area, the good news is that the new mandolin stock is looking better. The bad news is that, as another thread here discusses, the prices are up significantly.

    Sylvan got four...

    Re: Essential David Grisman

I like how you got it down to a dozen, but managed to include plenty more as BTWís. :)

The album with Tommy Emmanuel didnít do much for me, so I would have swapped it for Songs of Our Fathers. I...

Re: To be or not to be (a bluegrass player)

Me, too!!! So, I'll have to answer the survey with "no." I would have answered yes, though, if the question was "Were you mainly a bluegrass player during your first year of playing mandolin?"

    I...

Re: Ready to upgrade mandolin - need advice!

For any amount of money, you usually can get a better A mandolin than F mandolin from the same builder or company.

Mandolins with a gloss finish tend to be easier to find than with a satin finish....

    Re: Should I trade up?

I have to agree, unless you’re equally confident that you can upgrade your wife. Given that your wife actually gave you a mandolin, rather than grief for buying one, that doesn’t seem too likely.

    Re: David Surette has passed.

I started taking an online class from David a few months ago, and was astounded when it was suspended due to his illness. He was so energetic and upbeat that I never would have suspected he was...
  13. Re: Hey guys and gals, I need some help please . . . old newbie

My OM that I was describing is a Petersen Level 3, built in 2006. The one that Chuck flagged is a Level 2, but built six years later. Bill Petersen retired a few years after that, so this would be...

You might look into signing up for Mike Marshall's ArtistWorks course, since that starts at the basic basics and then makes its way to a really advanced level. Here are the first seven lessons:

    Pickguards and Tone

This probably has been discussed before, but I'm curious about whether a pickguard has any effect on a mandolin's tone and/or volume. Even if a pickguard is attached so minimally that it wouldn't...

    Re: Northfield 4th Gen F5

  21. Re: Hey guys and gals, I need some help please . . . old newbie

I totally agree! Of mandola, OM, and mandocello, the OM tuned GDAE has a range closest to the guitar's. It also sounds the best of all of those, IMHO, if you want to play chords with some open...
