    Re: Recording King RA-998

I own both an RM 1 and a Recording King resonator. Naturally they both have a different sound. There are times when I favor the Recording King over the RM 1 for its “metallic” sound. I’m surprised...

Re: Shop disc sander for small delicate work

My inner shop teacher comes out occasionally when I see these things. Please remember that a disc sander is designed to sand end grain and outside curves. It can on occasion sand edge grain but I...

Check the classifieds there is someone there that sells rims and necks. I can’t recall his name, but it was recently posted in the last few weeks.

Re: Replating a vintage National mandolin

Wouldnt an original untouched finish be more desirable than a replanting? Think vintage cars or furniture. I’d just polish it then go from there.

Re: aging fingers just can't cut it anymore

I just turned 70 two weeks ago and having taken up the mandolin in my early sixties I have nothing to compare as far as speed and loss of ability. I’m happy with two finger cords and just modeling...

Re: looking for pink floyd tabs?

Although I have not renewed my membership to Jim’s site in quite some time, ( and in his defense) the $5.00 is definitely well worth all that you get and more.

    Re: Practice wood?

Take a walk through your local Lowe’s. You would be pleasantly surprised at some of the figure maple in the racks.

    Re: Drum Sander recommendations

I have the Jet 1836, it’s a fine machine. For mandolins you can go with the 1632. I bought the 1836 for versatility.

    Re: Parchment Farm Blues

I know a luthier that when he saw my RM-1 said that he had one in his shop with the peeling finish problem. One would think that National would have solved the problem.

    Re: Nut Width Preference?

It’s amazing how the human brain adapts to different sizes. Although I prefer a wider nut, a narrow doesn’t bother me, and I can adapt very easily. There are times when I play one of my mandos then...

    Re: chisels

I would stay away from the chisels at the big box stores. Inferior metal and handles that just don’t fit the hand. For general use I like the old Stanley’s with the amber handles, or better yet the...

The only way to eliminate dust is to not cut wood. That being said a ceiling mounted “air scrubber” will help with the really fine stuff. There are several manufactures that supply them or they can...
