Re: Good Tone - How long does it actually take?

Re: Good Tone - How long does it actually take?

You recognize where you are at. That is a huge first step. Some people never get there. The worst players all think they are great.

The best players still have bad days and still think they...

Re: Anchor a finger on the pit guard or not?

Both Dan Crary on guitar and Tim May on guitar and mandolin plant for leads. I have heard both of them say during workshops that they wish they didn't. Dan got the habit established at a time when...

Re: Old New Guy -Any second day tips?

As far as finger placement, the proper placement is just behind the fret. You should not be on the fret bar nor should you be halfway between them.

There are a couple of exercises to determine...
  9. Re: 8 weeks post op elbow tendon repair and playing

A friend of mine, who is a pretty decent banjo player, had that surgery about ten years ago. They did not know if he would be able to play again but he recovered over about a year and a half and got...

Re: Old New Guy -Any second day tips?

Don't compare yourself to the pros. They do this full time and have spent thousands of hours at it.

It takes more time to get good than anyone expects. But what else have you got to do with your...

This is the final video in a series bassist Leland Sklar put out documenting the tour of Lyle Lovett's large band this summer. The whole series, includes 70 or so videos, and has been a fascinating...
  12. Re: Hello! I am new and in need of some bowlback advice.

It will be extremely physically hard to play, especially up the neck. It may be painful to play. This can lead to tendonitis and other issues. It may be impossible to fret some chords or notes...
  13. Re: Hello! I am new and in need of some bowlback advice.

In purchasing a bowlback mandolin possibly the most important thing to look at is the string height. They are made for extra light strings and many have been overstrung pulling the neck which ruins...

Wow. Those are all nice instruments. Only the last two are factory instruments and even they appear to be decent condition, marketable instruments. Most have significant value. The problem is...

Re: Mandolin is guitar upside down?

I am not talking about double stops. I am talking about playing chords, though the technique can be used on double stops as well. For example an E minor chord on guitar, can be played with one...

Worms are usually an involute profile, like the gear, so they are usually hobbed. The next most common processes are milling or grinding. They are rarely made on a lathe except as an expedient when...

Re: Mandolin is guitar upside down?

It is done using the tip. Fat fingers can be a blessing. I learned it on my own in the process of relearning after a hand injury but found out later both Doc Watson and Merle Travis would sometimes...

  23. Re: New player: a lot of pain in the knuckle of my left hand

Letting it heal is definitely good advice. Once you come back, look at how hard you are pressing the strings. Most people press too hard.
