Re: Silk & Steel on old instrument??

    Hi

Yes a Mandolute. It's far from pristine but it plays and it's stable.
I just did a search for those strings. I'm in the UK - looks like an import only, though I may stump up and give them a...

Re: Silk & Steel on old instrument??

Thanks for responding with some apparent knowledge of the Weymann. I had logged out of this thread and only came back late last night. In the interim I decided to chance it and fitted the GHS S&S...

Re: Silk & Steel on old instrument??

    Cheers Richard
That's good to know. Those old A1's always seemed better construction than the earlier Weymann's. At least though we are talking here about non F models which is reassuring. I say...

Silk & Steel on old instrument??

    I have a set of steel & silk strings (regular 11- 40).

Would it be safe to put these on an oval hole early 20th century mandolin (Weymann).

I can't figure if the tension would damage the neck...
  7. Re: Does your mando need a setup? Learn to do it yourself!

Yes, thanks Rob, it's hard to believe you distribute this free of charge. I'm sure almost any mandolinist would pay for such a great product. Well done and thanks again.

    Re: Microphones for home recording

There's a lot of interesting responses here, which is nice, thank you. Things to digest and reflect on. I think the net result of reading through all posts is that I'm now re thinking or rather -...

    Microphones for home recording

Man it's a glut of options, somewhat overwhelming.

I'm looking at reasonably cheap but I don't want to get something I'll ditch in a year.

On paper, a lot of reasonably nice looking mics - and...

Re: How do you approach a complex piece of music

Yes I've loved this thread, reading it and going back over the ideas and thoughts shared. I'm grateful for all that people have contributed. I can't say I'm flying but I'm now in a steady groove with...

Re: How do you approach a complex piece of music

That's nicely played, well done. I've already listened to it a few times and I'm sure, along with a couple of other versions performed on the mandolin, I'll be listening/watching them repeatedly...

Re: How do you approach a complex piece of music

That's a great summary and a good place to end a helpful discussion. I'd just like to thank everyone for chipping in with thoughts and ideas.

For myself, BWV 1001 Presto will be a long journey of...

Re: How do you approach a complex piece of music

That's certainly true. There are some interesting and unusual Bach recordings that I love that might fall into this category. Bach's a summit composer, working at high altitudes. It takes effort to...

Re: How do you approach a complex piece of music

I have a copy of Jig of Slurs from one of the books of collected pipe tunes. It's littered with ornaments that look quite puzzling to a mandolinist. I always loved the pipes, although those marathon...

Re: How do you approach a complex piece of music

    Hi Michael
Another vote for the work it backwards approach. I didn't realise it was a well embraced method.

I was just practising and thinking how I need to sort the fingering out. The Presto...

Re: How do you approach a complex piece of music

(Somewhat off topic). The sublime and celestial Arthur Grumiaux recording is still kicking around on CD, often very cheap too. It's a Double Decca package. I don't know what it is but it is truly...

Re: How do you approach a complex piece of music

I'm glad you said this. It reminded me of my former music teacher who looked over a piece first and did just this, noting that this here is a descending scale, this an arpeggio, and so on. Perhaps...

Re: How do you approach a complex piece of music

I mentioned that I'd heard of this approach before. It sounds good in theory but I at least can't hear the music when I start at the end, it's like I get the tune in my ear by hearing it move...

Re: How do you approach a complex piece of music

Ha. I realise that i never posted the link to the piece that got me started on this. This thread is well underway but
    I must correct this now:

Re: How do you approach a complex piece of music

I s'pose with simpler/shorter pieces it works easier. I would approach trad tumes by getting a phrase or so down in Part A, then finish the rest of Part A and move into Part B. Because it's...

Re: How do you approach a complex piece of music

that made me laugh - in the context of us being lab rats.

Thanks for a prompt response. I think that's an obvious and probably a good strategy. I might chop the score into 4 bar loops and then...

How do you approach a complex piece of music

Being a Bach head and inspired by this fine display of memory skills I challenged myself to learn it, if not to memorise. After a couple of days I find, as I always do when I approach a piece of...
