    Re: Illustrated Mandolin Chord Bible

Just a quick note: C Family Chords have now been uploaded, all charts updated with cafe shorthand and other improvements as mentioned above.

Movable chords to be updated next.

    Re: What's this? 0-3-2-0

It’s the exact notation method of tablature, without the grid.

A tablature grid is much like the musical staff, but the horizontal lines represent strings rather than notes. The vertical lines...

    Re: What's this? 0-3-2-0

Definitely no need for condescension, my humble apology both to you and to the late Billy. Had my mind been set in stone, I’d not have started this thread, and I do appreciate ALL the input. As I’ve...

    Re: Illustrated Mandolin Chord Bible

Update: I've completed the C family chord chart changes, and am now working on the movable chords. The following changes have been made:

    1. A six-fret graphic now used throughout
    2. Bridge/nut...

    Re: What's this? 0-3-2-0

    To follow up ...

I have now re-worked all the C family chord images (though they're not online as yet). As I mentioned in my original post, I added this type of notation to each chart, and I named...

    Re: What's this? 0-3-2-0

Hmm, perhaps a label of E X to indicate economic expression, like so:

    Ex: 0-2-3-0

or F R as an abbreviation of Frablature

    Fr: 0-0-2-3

    What's this? 0-3-2-0

Since picking up mandolin and spending time at the Mandolin Cafe, I've become accustomed to this shorthand way of communicating mandolin chords:

    0-2-3-0

    etc.

Is this same type of shorthand...

    Re: The joy of arranging

Just a couple suggestions re: ukuleles. Ukes are great at strumming rhythms, as you have already mentioned, but they also sound great picking single notes, so you could (1) have them playing...
  12. Re: How much of a difference in sound does string gauge make?

All I would advise is to experiment. Strings aren’t as expensive as mandolins, so if you are planning to stick with playing for the rest of your life, then splurge on extra pack of different strings...

Re: Distressed Mandolin and Regular Playing

Ö and again, and again Ö

I suppose some could say Willie neglects his guitar, and some would disagree and say itís a case of honest wear from a man who has worn his tool pretty much to a nub, but...

    Re: Cannot Name This Chord

Well yes, as I mentioned in my earlier post, in context matters and could suggest something totally different than G … what you use it for matters … but how it sounds in context matters more, IMO.

Re: Humidity control, ay ay ay

I think the bad humidity problems are mostly from humidifiers, damp cloths, sponges, what have you, inside cases to be sure, mostly due to people trying to prevent problems and causing them instead....

  19. A Few More Enharmonic Movable Chord Shapes

Matt, the first shape you show there is one of the most used chords in my own playing for 7 chords (rootless) as well as Diminished chords, great, versatile shape to use & a great voicing to my ears

Re: Mandolin is guitar upside down?

When I discovered that Lightnin’ Hopkins used it, I had to give it a shot myself. Not an uncommon technique for some blues players to play an E chord with index finger at the G# on G string, and both...
